A battle screen is a separate battlefield area that characters are taken to when an encounter starts; while the battlefield area may resemble the area that the characters were just in, it very often has a specific boundary that the players either cannot leave, or can only leave if they agree to forfeit the particular fight. This is most often used in RPG games where the characters are represented as walking around a world map until such an encounter.
