Battleship: The Classic Naval Combat Game

Game » consists of 9 releases. Released Dec 22, 1989

Battleship is a video game rendition of the popular board game of the same name. Two players place ships in squares on their sides of the board then take turns choosing squares blindly attempting to locate and destroy the opponent's fleet.

It's never a good idea to move your board game into a video game.

This game is the same as in the board game of the same name. The player's goal is to properly position the ships and destroy all enemy ships and prevent the enemy from destroying them all. The game is turn-based, so the player cannot react to the attack right away. The game was released in 1993 on the NES, when the SNES had been available for 3 years, which makes the game not very advanced graphically for those times. Unlike the sequel on the SNES, the game is playable.

The very idea of making a game based on a board game is weak considering the gameplay will be quite boring and repetitive, as all you do is place the ships and then when it is your turn you try to hit the ship. All the levels are the same, the same number of ships and the same types and types, and the same size and appearance. The opponent's artificial intelligence is quite stupid, it hits the center of the board all the time and not at its corners, so it is possible that it will not even hit. And if that was not enough, if you position your ships at all angles, the enemy will hardly hit you at all, which makes the gameplay even more boring and repetitive.

Putting aside the fact that the SNES was released 3 years earlier, the graphics and animations are pretty decent by NES standards. In fact both the animation and the graphics in the menu make quite a big impression. The front cover of the game with 3 ships, thanks to the fact that it is rich in details, looks very good. Also, the game's soundtrack, while only six tracks in length, is great and fits very well with the game. There have also been a lot of remixes that are even better.

Rather boring, but still worth playing.
