Golems? havels? Or smoughs? Or another one? XD
Dark Souls
Game » consists of 14 releases. Released Sep 22, 2011
A quasi-sequel to From Software's action-RPG Demon's Souls, set in a new universe while retaining most of the basic gameplay and the high level of challenge. It features a less-linear world, a new checkpoint system in the form of bonfires, and the unique Humanity system.
What armor is best for heavy melee chars?
@Watezet: statistically Smough's
but it makes you look exactly like Smough only small, eeeew
Havel's is second in stat's, only by the tiniest margin, and at last looks decent
@Watezet: All the toughest armors like Havel's, Stone, Iron Golem, Smough's are not upgradable.
There are some weaker armors you could upgrade, but it would require a SHITLOAD of Twinkling Titanite, too much in fact to make it feasible to farm for a sane person, and I still doubt they would be as good as those 4 super heavy armor's. No one has done the legwork to check yet I don't think, not on the wiki's anyway (at least outside Japan)
Pretty sure the official guide lists all the armors at their base and upgraded maximums. Not sure which ends up as the overall best, but I imagine it would probably be a mix and matched set.
@Watezet: Pretty much anywhere where those 4 new areas opened after Anor Lono: Archives, Catacombs, laval level (i forget the name), or New Londo

@gla55jAw: atm im SL47 48.2/97.2
With havels helm, chest, Smough gloves and gold-hemmed legs XD
Ive beated forrest and anor londo atm
I'm in Anor Londo too. Just picked up the Black Iron set and Havels. Right now though, I'm SL83 and have 49ish/101.5 with the Elite Knight set. I upgraded the chest piece to +6 and the rest to, between +3-4. It's pretty strong when you upgrade it, stronger than the gold-hemmed set. I'd like to put on havel's, the black iron or the one I bought from the Sen's Fortress merchant, but I'd need to level quite a bit. You might want to look into upgrading the Elite Knight set.
Well Smougs chest has 106 physical resistance.
Elite Knight chest has 39. even fully upgraded it would be far far behind.
The Black iron set seems like it has the best chance with upgrades at it's chest start at 68. But again: shiload of twinkling titanite.
Can't check actual upgrade paths right now as I just started Negame+ and don't have access to upgrades yet.

Oh ok, that is way better. I haven't found that set yet.
@Watezet: Archives is in Anor Londo, to the left of the first flame. In catacombs you need a holy weapon to finish off the skeletons. (or keep moving before the get up again)
@Pessh: Seems like a variation on the steel armor ( from the merchant in at sen's fortress) But with a giant armor helmet, I think, since I'm under the impression that the steel helmet has an open face guard. But I haven't bought it yet.
Speaking of which I'm trying to upgrade a steel plate to 15 to see if it's better than the super heavies. Looks promising at +7, but it's still not a match against a black iron armor +5 ( still the most fire resistant heavy armor I've found, but falls behind to the Smoughs and the Stone armor)
To sum up, the Stone armor is second to Smoughs, then Havel's, then the Golem's. The best standard, fully upgradable armor is Steel as far as I know. There's the Baldur set that is slightly more lightning resistant.
I'm wondering about the Giant armor set...
