    Day of Defeat: Source Review

Day of Defeat: Source is the remake of the popular ww2 half-life mod by Activision and the DOD mod community. The series is mostly set in Italy and France so most on the action in the game goes on around churches and old towns. Like TF2 it’s a class based shooter that all have specific weapons. Anyway let’s get on with the review.

    Gameplay
There are 2 objective modes in the game Capture the Flag and Destroy Enemy Vehicles. And the classes are as follows
    • Rifleman: Standard Rifle with melee weapon and grenade launcher attachment.
    • Assault : Submachine gun with secondary melee also has smoke and fragmentation grenade and a melee combat weapon
    • Support: Heavy machineguns with interchangeable fire modes. Also armed with 2 fragmentation grenades.
    • Sniper: Equipped with a Sniper Rifle, pistol a smoke grenade and also a melee weapon
    • Machine Gunner: Machine gun with a pistol and melee weapon although the machine gun cannot be shot when standing up or crouching it can be deployed when prone or facing a supportive edge
    • Anti-Armour Personnel: Equipped with rocket launcher ,short range rifle/smg and of course the signature melee weapon
The Game modes are basically copies of CS & TF but the flag capture much quicker. In turn this makes them a lot more difficult to hold. And that would be my criticism. There are not enough game modes two is not really enough to satisfy a players needs considering this is a standalone multiplayer shooter you’d think it have a lot more options. Dare I say it even the console shooters like Medal of Honour appeal to me more than this game. But for some reason this game attract player. One thing this game does well is recoil. Even on the smallest and most accurate of weapons you have to compensate for the severe recoil. And the reduction of accuracy when running or walking suggests that the game is for more experienced players who like realism.

    Graphics & Sound
On account of the games graphics as the name suggest it is based on Valves aging but competent Source engine. Which in this game has had a few minor tweaks it was the first major valve product to include high dynamic range rendering and also added motion blur, depth of field, film grain and colour correction. The film grain is particularly good as it gives the game a classy look one that has obviously been looked at by other publishers. Dice for example use it in their upcoming shooter Battlefield: Heroes. Presentation is defiantly the games strength and it basically adds a better looking presentation to a very old game which soon grows irritating and boring. But it can be a refreshing break from other dreary and grey environments that now constantly inhibit games. As for sound I can’t comment much but I did rather like the ambient music after listening to an empty servers ambience it was really impressive how much sound they include.

    Conclusion
This is not an essential buy. But if you own Gmod and want some extra stuff to make your machinima this pack will make a very good addition to your collection. Its not good for consistent amount of play but it can refresh you with its unique graphical style and fast paced action. My score for this game is 6/10 or 60% by all means not a unique game in terms of gameplay but for graphical charm it pleases even the most cynical of players.

      A competent multiplayer shooter 0

Day of Defeat Source (DoD henceforth) is a WW2 based squad shooter from Valve that uses the much loved source engine, and follows a very similar style to Counter Strike: Source. It’s fast, its action packed, and most importantly of all, it’s a lot of fun. While it isn’t perfect, it provides a lot of enjoyment and satisfaction and with a strong online community, I believe this will be the case for years to come. The idea behind the game is simple. You play a series of rounds on a particular map, ...

A solid online experience for those who still love WWII. 0

There are tons of people who love playing shooters online. The amount of people who are still in love with WWII themed shooters however, is dwindling. So you really have three choices when choosing which WWII themed shooter to play online. You can play Battlefield 1942 which is becoming extremely dated, you can play the unbalanced and camper heavy Call of Duty 2, or you can play Day of Defeat: Source. The graphics aren't going to really impress anybody, that part is obvious. However, it still isn...
