Not a Rollercoaster, but a Theme Park 0

Despite Deus Ex: Human Revolution’s setting being in the future, the game itself doesn’t even feel like a modern shooter. It incentivizes exploration, which modern shooters were weaned from long ago, and features the kind of sci-fi story that languished after Neuromancer and Blade-Runner came out. At the same time, Eidos Montreal has taken several contemporary concepts and blended them with the old. It is a weird mix, and as a result Human Revolution has the look and feel of a mainstream shooter...

I didn't own a PC in the late 90s, so I was never able to experience the original Deus Ex which I still only have a vague understanding of its significance. I did have enough knowledge to know that Deus Ex: HR had some very big shoes to fill. When the Game of the Year Awards came around at the end of 2011, Deus Ex was pretty absent. But when I think back to Deus Ex I realize that despite some questionable design choices here and there and a bit of technical jank the game is really a lot of fun.T...

Too Stuck in the Past 0

Adam Jensen talks to a dude.Deus Ex: Human Revolution from Eidos Montreal and Square Enix feels like a game out of time. Its cyberpunk aesthetic and storyline as well as its level design and some of its mechanics feel ripped out of a game that was made in the era of the original Deus Ex. Back in the heady days of 2000 when films like The Matrix were still blowing everybody’s minds, you could get away with a gruff protagonist wearing a trenchcoat and sunglasses, but it looks very out of place in ...

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Review (Director's Cut - PC) 4

New protagonist Adam Jenson procrastinates with cigaretteDeus Ex: Human Revolution (released in 2011 by Eidos Montreal) is a bold re-imagining of the genre defining mix of first person shooting, stealth, hacking, exploration and decision making that the original PC game was known for. I recently decided to play HR in anticipation for the sequel Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. This is my first Deus Ex game but I’m intimately aware of the effect the original had on the gaming landscape over time. ...

A decent tribute to the original 0

Deus Ex: Human Revolution makes a good effort at recapturing a lot of the things that made the original great. The levels are filled with alternatives routes you can take, air ducts, doors you have to hack and all that stuff you are familiar with from the original. There is also tons and tons of sneaking around and city hubs where you can walk around and solve plenty of side quests. At around ~25h the game is also of a good decent length. That said, Human Revolution falls flat at actually evolvin...

    Great add-on! 0

I love the original Deus Ex. It wasn't with out it's faults, however it did a lot of stuff right. This DLC does a lot of stuff right as well. They have made some improvements to the graphics system and it shows, especially with the lighting. There are times when you notice steam coming off of pipes or the way light filters down into a room or out of a window that really help to draw you in. The voice work in the game was very well done as well. The main characters all sound just fine but I had t...

More to it than I expected 0

My general opinion of DLC is that it’s overpriced. Still, I enjoyed Deus Ex Human Revolution and wanted more, so when The Missing Link DLG was 66% off for $5 I bought it. I expected $5 to still be overpriced, but there’s actually more here than I expected. My first surprise was that it was treated as its own game. I expected it to modify the main game and insert itself where it fits in the story, which would have been better for anyone who comes late and wants to play the whole thing. I came earl...

Deus Ex's intricate mechanics are expertly framed by its story 0

The original Deus Ex is still to this very day considered to be one of the finest action/rpg's of all time and with good reason -- it successfully told a poignant, well-realized story, merged stealth and combat mechanics and showered the player with a ton of choices, which added a ton of depth and variety to the proceedings. It's been a long time coming but the next-gen offering in the Deus Ex series --dubbed Human Revolution-- is finally here and it's without question one of the most ambitious ...

    1 Part RPG, 3 Parts stealth/action game 2

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a RPG that takes all the fun out of role-playing games. Still, it's a fun game and if you're a fan of action games with a bit more realism, you'll have fun with DX:HR.What do I mean by "taking all the fun out of RPGs"? While this game does have an interesting dialogue manipulation system that pops up rather infrequently, side quests and (moderately) large maps that you can roam around in, that's about as far as it goes in the RPG genre. There's very little you can do...

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Review 0

4 Cyberboost ProEnergy Bars out of 5Adam Jensen: Beekeeper.Deus Ex: Human Revolution turned out to be a much, MUCH better game than I anticipated. It quickly went from a game that I knew existed, but didn’t have much hope for based on how the original’s sequel fared and because of some of the action heavy footage I had seen leading up to its release, to a game that I am extremely happy to have played and may play again someday. Human Revolution is a prequel to the original Deus Ex. You play as A...

    Zing! 0

In 2000, Deus Ex was released for the PC. It revolutionized the ability to make choices in video games, allowing you to do what you want, and how you want it. A sequel, Deus Ex: Invisible War, was released in 2003, but was criticized for being dumbed down, and, in the end, was disliked by the original’s fans. Fast-forward to 2007. After years of a “Deus Ex drought,” news of another Deus Ex game was revealed. Four years later, it was finally released. With hype that big, could Deus Ex: Human Revo...

An evolutionary step in the right direction. 0

It has been over a decade since the first Deus Ex rolled onto our computer screens and made us think long and hard about the way we approach player choice in video games. Before and since then, only a few games have managed to come close to giving the player the illusion of free choice (namely the likes of BioShock and Fallout 3), but almost none have successfully delivered an experience where your decisions display a marked and dramatic effect on both characters and the gameplay. The first Deus...

Onlive Review: Eye Catching Start Ultimately Runs Out of Steam 0

This game was played on the Onlive system and I will review both the performance on Onlive as well as the game.OnliveSimply put the game ran nearly flawlessly on the Onlive system. I played it through the Microconsole and had no issues. The game play was smooth, graphics looked very sharp and the lag was not noticeable. There were a few instances of game crashes, but nothing really to take note of.Game ReviewDeus Ex right out of the bat is an incredible thrill ride. I am a huge fan of the cycber...

I played the original Deus Ex and I was afraid that I'd be disappointed with this game.I wasn't.I instantly got addicted to this game after playing through the first missions and kept thinking about it until I finished. I searched every corner and did every side quest. The story was well presented but the the animations for the character's faces and bodies were not top notch. Almost all the characters had the same animations while talking. The voice acting was decent. The real joy came from expl...

Be more human than the human 0

I've read many articles about "games that need a sequel" and they usually involve long forgotten franchises or great games that never got a follow-up thanks to lack of sales or just simply because it would be cool to get a new game. So when Deus Ex: Human Revolution, the third game in a franchise where the previous title was in 2003, not only were expectations high but skepticism was likely on par. With one of the most important games of the last decade with one of the most polarizing, Human Rev...

Not at the same level as the first, but still captures the feel. 0

Some follow-ups to great games are also great, and some of them are pretty bad. Success or failure often hinges upon whether the developers understand and appreciate what made the original game great, and where it needed to improve. When they do, it results in excellent games like Half-Life 2 and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat. When they don't, it results in fiascos like Deus Ex: Invisible War. Invisible War is the "Star Wars Prequel Trilogy" of video games. It was made by people who did not re...

Your limbless worries are over! 0

I jumped on the Dues Ex: Human Revolution hype-band-wagon impulsively. Having never played any of the previous titles in the series I got a little rush dramatically clicking the purchase button on Steam (had Valve's little distribution platform not saved my credit card there's a good chance I wouldn't be writing this right now). I live on the edge, just like you decisively can as Adam Jensen in Eidos Montreal's cyber-punk inspired world set in 2027.Naturally, the tables feel turned as I write th...

So Deus Ex is like a cool game from 2000 made by Ion Storm. It's basically Blade Runner the (good) game. You play as J(esus). C(hrist). Denton, the trenchcoat-wearing, bespectacled crusader of edgy teens everywhere. It is considered by some to be one of the best PC games of all time. Ignoring the aborted fetus that was Invisible Wars, 11 years later came Human Revolution. The third core game in the series, and first developed by Eidos Montreal, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided takes place before the eve...

Immersive dive in character development and philosophical themes. 0

It took quite a while for the Deus Ex series to get back on track with releases since the second game, arguably weaker than the first one which is now considered a classic, this might have contributed to its hiatus. Fortunately the series is now revived in this new iteration and tries to live up to expectations, which are not exactly low to tell the truth. There's quite a lot here that is taken right back from the original, especially from the first one, for the better or the worse. The core gam...

How I played the game: This is my first Deus Ex game, so I can't speak to how it fits into the series or how it compares. I played the PS3 version well after the first patch. Load times were O.K. for me, not particularly short, but not bad. I played it on the hardest difficulty my first time through. I played a mixed build with max armor, some hacking, all grenade effect resists, and a mix of the movement stuff. Maxed assault rifle but I used the pistol quite a lot.The short version: This is a G...

    Not an embarassment 0

The name Deus Ex holds a lot of weight with the video game community. It was released in 2000 to critical acclaim. It’s well known for its numerous ways to tackle each situation in the game. The sequel Deus Ex Invisible War didn’t do so hot, so there were no further attempts at prolonging the series. Eleven years later Deus Ex: Human Revolution hit store shelves as a prequel to the original game. Human Revolution had a lot to live up to. While it didn’t necessarily hit the mark it certainly didn...

    The Power of Choice 0

I must admit that this is the first and only game I've played in the Deus Ex franchise. Therefore, some of the comments I make may be common knowledge to diehard franchise fans.I love stealth games. Since most titles are geared towards engaging in some form of conflict, there's something very refreshing about an experience where part of the gameplay is avoiding confrontation. As you sneak around the various environments, there's no denying that the atmosphere in this title is absolutely fantasti...
