Overview
The Double Cherry is an item that first appeared in Super Mario 3D World. The idea for the item was inspired by the results of a coding error made during the game's development. As stated by game director Kenta Motokura in an Iwata Asks interview, "Well actually...we discovered that when a staff member made a mistake with the placement tool and put in two player Marios."
Item Properties
As the name implies, the Double Cherry duplicates the character that picks it up. Up to five duplicates of a character can exist at the same time, not including the original. It is most often used for puzzles that require multiple characters to stand on a switch at the same time or platforms that require a specific number of characters to stand on them.
The Double Cherry can be combined with other power-ups such as the Fire Flower or Boomerang Flower, with all duplicates taking on the properties of the second power-up. If all five duplicates are already active and another Double Cherry is picked up, a coin appears. Upon reaching the flag pole at the end of a stage in Super Mario 3D World, all duplicates turn into coins. Other players can steal the Double Cherry power-up by executing a ground pound close to the player currently possessing it.
