We never see Dr Grout 'alive' as it were. We only get to know him as a disembodied voice from a tape-recorder. When you do finally find the Malkavian Primogen, a charred skeleton is all that remains.
Once a psychologist in an insane asylum he was bitten by one of his patients and spent the rest of his years searching for answers and a cure for his 'condition'. Upon encountering the vampire society ruled by the Camarilla he is welcomed among them as a member of the Primogen. Being of the Malkavian bloodline he soon falls victim to (albeit justified) paranoia.
In the end his rivals plot against him, finally culminating in his death at the hands of Ming-Xiao. Nines Rodriguez is framed for the murder.
