They couldn't let the IP die could they.
Duke Nukem Forever
Game » consists of 14 releases. Released Jun 14, 2011
After approximately fourteen years of development, the heavily infamous sequel to Duke Nukem 3D was finally released, in which the macho Duke must damper yet another alien invasion.
Take Two CEO Threatens the World With More Duke Nukem
Why? Why not improve the franchise name with a higher quality product?Just let it die!
Thankfully, given the arduous development cycle of Duke Nukem games, we probably won't see another one till at least 2036.
If they give me the post-modern Duke that the Giantbomb crew was talking about, I'd be all in. "There's no where left to go but down baby! Kick out the chair..."
If they end up making another Duke Nukem game and make it a self-aware deconstruction of him, then they might as well deconstruct the majority of video game heroes while there at it. Most of them are terrible cliches.
Gearbox was in a bad position. They essentially had a year to polish a turd that was created by those jackasses at 3D Realms. I'm all for a true Duke sequel made by Gearbox from the ground up. They need to hire good writers though. Duke's dialogue in DNF is terrible.
threatens? Alex, seriously, u do realise 3d realms made DNF, now Gearbox has the stage for future DN games, u cant say their threatening when Gearbox hasnt even made a DN game of their own yet. it could end up blowing ur balls off.
I find peoples reaction to the game quite funny. It was in development for 15 years. It went through ground up changes and restarts several times. I expected the game to be what it is.
Now that DNF is out of the way, they can try making a good- more relevant- Duke Nukem game.
I believe it is possible.
Keep Duke strong, Gearbox. You're a great developer and I'm sure you'll iron out any flaws Duke Nukem Forever had with the next game.
If the next Duke will be more self-aware as many of you are suggesting, it would probably be best to introduce Duke Nukem's arch rival who appears stronger than Duke but with a more appealing personality.
Then Duke has to fight and kill him after he's brainwashed by aliens. Come get sum, motherfucker!

Definitely, Borderlands was one of the only interesting shooters made of late so I'm confident Gearbox will be able to deliver something good. Whatever the next Duke game is as long as it breaks the COD mould that can only be a good thing.
@alex: That was a funny headline but it's too early to throw the Gearbox Duke game under the bus. Personally I think you're being snarky just for the sake of it in this article, sorry.
Remember, folks. Gearbox got DNF released just for the sake of actually releasing it. Next Duke Nukem will be miles ahead.

Well said.
Even though DNF is a steaming pile of shit, I'm actually kinda happy about this announcement because maybe now we'll get an actual Duke Nukem game that has been developed and released during a more appropriate time frame and one that will actually be...you know...good. Additionally it'll be built the ground up by 2K so if anything that instils a little bit of confidence in the franchise.
I am guessing that if they did another one it would be way better than DNF, because it would be one more unified vision. I mean Gearbox had to doctor that game up and had to fill in the blanks.
Go ahead and hate me for I am a bad person, but from what I've played so far, it's a pretty fun game. It's kind of cool to be doing things that you don't do in shooters anymore. Contrary to what Jeff said, in his review, the platforming bits were a bit of fresh air, along with the little RC bits and so on. And come on, didn't anyone chuckle at the Christian Bale section of the game? I'm not at the creepy alien ship part yet, but so far, I kind of like the game.
My word, Marshall! I'm do believe a normal man's pants would be torn asunder were they to allow their thighs such distinct breadth!
"Because here in America, thank God, we have the ability to do what we want." It never ceases to alarm me when people say this sort of thing and mean it.Yeah, that statement completely came off as childish.
I drink your nostalgia! I suck it right up from under you! and there isn't a damn thing you can do about it! Now, swear to me there is no god! SWEAR IT!
if gearbox developed a duke game from the start i would suspect it would be awesome so ....This is my view on this. Despite the... Tepid nature of Forever and Critical Mass, now that the franchise is safely in the hands of a real developer (Gearbox), the future's bright for the King.
