Travel across a scaled-down version of Europe as a trucker, delivering a variety of cargo and expanding a trucking fleet in this sequel to SCS's main truck driving simulator series.
I must be either grossly underestimating how weird Europe is, or grossly underestimating how influential Giant Bomb is, because how on Earth is Euro Truck Simulator 2 the best selling game on Steam right now? It's 36 flippin' dollars!
Explanation: the mods out there for the game actually make it kind of interesting to play? I dunno that's my theory. It could be pretty damn fun, WE JUST DON'T HAVE ALL THE FACTS MAN!
It is a new release and I'd imagine business is slow with all the regulars due to the recent sale but it does make me wonder if we overestimate how popular Steam is, especially when games aren't on sale.
I was sort of interested in it after the quick look. It looked like a game you could just sit down for a couple of hours and play while you listen to a podcast or some music.
The Yogscast also did a livestream during the holidays; it's safe to say that it has been getting enough exposure (not necessarily positive exposure but hey) over the past few weeks to make it to the top of a slow week (weeks? Month? ....months?) of game releases.

I have a feeling The Yogscast stream made a lot of people buy this, hell I sat there and watched them play it for 6 hours.
A) You're underestimating how fun sim games are, especially when you throw in the mechanical aspect of them.
B) You're underestimating how many PC gamers are into weird shit in general.

Game is awesome. I'd have bought it on Steam, but I was impatient and bought it through the publisher's site. Been really enjoying it; excellent game to play while listening to music.
@BisonHero: Europe is super weird. I seem to recall Farm Simulator being pretty high on the list when it came out too.
Farming Simulator 2013 outsold combined sales of Medal of Honour over all 3 platforms of MoH's release week, which was like the second or third week Farming Sim had been out. And was like the highest selling release until Football Manager 2013 came out.
People love sims, and some sims are legitimately fun.
I have to admit I got a copy after the quick look. I had played the last one and it wasn't that great, but this one was a massive improvement in every department. I liked listening to French metal stations in it too.
FULL DISCLOSURE; I have also played Tokyo Bus Guide 1 & 2, Big Rigs & Desert Bus.

I'm still waiting for my wilderness survival sim. GODDAMN IT I'M TIRED OF WAITING!
The other games on the list are either older, more expensive recent releases or preorders. None of those would be seeing a sales spike so it has to be a slow week. Combined with the sale price, europe's love of sims and the positive coverage it's received in the media and it's snuck it's way to the top.

As someone who's really into sim games and who has never considered a truck sim, i bought this on Steam and have just come off playing it for 4 hours and i've found it pretty relaxing and strangely nostalgic as i listen to European radio...hell just listening to a radio station itself is nostalgic for me at this point.
A lot of sim games come across as a simple slapped together cash grab but the GB QL of this game impressed me with the quality of effort i feel went into this sim so i like to support those who build sims with what seems like a genuine interest in the subject matter.
...and when all that's done you install mods and tear ass all over Europe.
Europe, it's a big continent in love with simulators.
This is true. America loves to kill people with chainsaws, Europe loves simulations and strategy, preferably games where you can strategize and be a führer like in civilization ;)

Nah fuck cabela, hunting unlimited is where its at. You actually have to track and animals and shit. Its pretty great.
I really wish they'd at least add some kind of hunger, thirst fatigue(sleep) management to deer hunting games. I've been a fan since the original Deer Hunter. I think the first Cabela's Big Game Hunter used to have some of that. I remember packing jerky on hunting trips.
Might be a bit late, but I just want to let you guys know: If I walk into one of the major electronic stores here, I have the option to buy these fabulous products (roughly translated):
-Airport Fire Department Simulator 2013
-Suspension Railway Simulator 2013
-ABC Protection Simulator 2013
-Model Railway Simulator 2013
-Surgery Simulator
-Police Simulator
-Service Station Simulator
-Army Tank Simulator (yes, it's actually called army tank simulator)
-City Bus Simulator Munich
-Winegrowing Simulator
-Quarry Simulator
and a shit ton of other stuff. I think it's mostly Germany that's crazy about that stuff though. And I can tell you: Don't even compare Eurotruck Simulator to the shit I mentioned. It might not be the best game ever, but at least it's not.....this
And that's an official picture from the website of the "Quarry Simulator 2012"
I don't know. The quick look was oddly compelling though. If it was just about driving your truck around it would be really boring but the RPG and company building aspects looked kind of interesting.
I don't think those are rankings. It would make more sense if that order was decided by Valve's marketing team to maximize sales. Can anyone say otherwise?
It is selling well, and it is fun. Its not for everyone it just hits the rpg and customization spots for me. Aswell as wanting to taste what it is like being a driver in the real world and then what a real truck driver has to do on a normal average day.
Not the mental days or crazy people like Ice road truckers.
Also Farm Simulator 2013 is selling well as well. No need to be a such a pessimist about it all folks.
Also after I had my fill with Red Faction Guerilla I still had a hankering for Demolition..... this satisfied it.

Nah they're definitely rankings because sales affect them in weird ways and if you follow the trends the rankings make sense.
My best guess is that maybe redeeming a code counts as sale, and thus anyone who bought the game before it was out on steam, went on steam and redeemed their CD key on steam, which got counted as a sale or something and bumped it up. If not, hey, maybe the game is just doing well, there's not a whole lot else on Steam this month that's interesting, so maybe this quirky title attracted a lot of attention. I mean there's got to be a large user base for this stuff or they wouldn't put out that insanely expensive Train Simulator DLC all the time, for years on end.
