A quirky platformer with nothing unsettling at all going on
Eversion is an indie platformer that was originally released for free online, and later released via Steam, with updated graphics, additional secrets, and better graphics. The game starts off very similar to the original Super Mario games, with the player jumping over blocks and defeating enemies by stomping on their heads. It is undeniably cheerful, with bright colors and happy color designs. Indeed, like Braid, it seems to wear its lineage proudly, rather than cover it up.
Ultimately, I can't give too much information on the way the game proceeds without spoiling a lot of the surprise, which is arguably where the game is strongest. Suffice to say, it goes down some very interesting roads. Despite its deceptively simple premise, it quickly sets itself apart from its peers.
The game is not perfect. Its graphics are fairly simplistic, and the sound design, while fun, is limited . You may find songs becoming repetitive as you play. The difficulty curve also ramps up wildly after the first couple levels, and rapidly becomes unforgiving. It gets to the point of frustration at certain points. It also lacks certain options that you might expect games to have, such as volume levels. It doesn't do the best job of explaining itself, as I couldn't figure out what using your everse power meant or how to do it, and ended up having to look it up online. However, once you get past these nagging issues, you will find a very neat little game with a lot of interesting ideas.
It will likely only last you a couple hours, give or take, depending on your skill level. However, at five dollars on steam, it's a pretty good deal. If you're still unsure, the original version without the upgrades is still available to download for free!
