When you play Fallout make sure you give it the latest patch, it fixes a few game killing bugs and removes an annoying time limit from the game.

is the time limit the Water Chip mission?  It says you have x amount of days to complete it....

Im enjoying it so far, its got alot of depth really for such an old game.

This is kinda of a silly question. You can't even find Fallout 1 sold by itself anymore and the compilation costs like 15 dollars.

Go to Good Old Games and register for the beta. When you get in you can buy them both for $5.99 (each). They both have the latest patches and have been set up to work on XP/Vista (although I got the originals to work on Vista anyway, but there you go).

Maybe the kid is just asking which one is better. My personal prefference is the second.
