Far Cry 2 Review
Far Cry 2 is a first person shooter set in the open plains of Africa. You play one of 9 characters in your adventure through an amazing and deep world.
Graphically Far Cry 2 is simply one of the greatest looking games to ever have been seen by man. The detail is astonishing from the way the sunlight shines through the trees to the extreme facial detail. This is one of the games greatest points and even on the lower to medium details the game still looks amazing. The things that have had a lot of work put into are the flames and the explosions, they are simply the greatest I have seen in any game and unlike most other games huge explosions do not cause any framerate lag whatsoever! You will need a fairly high end rig to be able to run everything on ultra high but the game runs well on lower end rigs on the lower graphical settings.
The story of FC2 is quite interesting because even though the story will be the same for each of the characters it can be told in different ways depending on which character you choose. Depending on which character you pick it will place the others around the world for you to meet up with and complete missions with. Also during the story there are various events which keep the story fresh and have unexpected surprises for you to come up against.
Back to the detail of the game you can see the realism factor that has been played. The sun will rise and set, weapons will become rusty and dirty over time and also they may jam or even break if they are overused. The same applies to the various vechiles in the game, smoke will pour out of the engine and eventually the cars will break down but with a little initiative you can fix up the cars and make them run as good as new.
The gameworld is completely open and there are no loading screens in this world except between deaths. The AI in the game was pretty great, the way they reacted to fires, wounded companions, injuries was something special. However at times I did find the AI to be glitchy and frustrating when they would find me when I was in complete cover and had not moved.
After some time driving between missions becomes a chore and by the end you will most likely have chosen the missions which involve you travelling the least distance rather than those which you feel would be best. Almost every mission has an alternative way to complete it and at the end there is a choice which has to be made although disappointingly both choices lead to the same ending.
Overall the game was pretty great, however it is not the greatest fps ever made or anywhere near it, it gave us a look at a new way to play games and has paved the way for further games to work on.
