Square Enix have launched the official website for Final Fantasy Gaiden

An early translation of some of it's content has shed some light:

A young boy is due to be recognised as an adult by visiting the kingdom's castle. When he arrives, he notices that the King is distraught - the princess has been snatched by the "Witch of the North", and now as a young adult he sets off to save the princess and meet new friends along the way...sounds familiar.

4 young boys and girls will meet and depart many a time. Sometimes they will quarrel, and whilst building relationships, before long they will be saving the world.

    • Producer: Tomoya Asano (FF3 DS, FF4 DS, Fullmetal Alchemist series)
    • Character design and art director: Akihiko Yoshida (Ogre Battle saga, FFT, FF12, FF3 DS)
    • Sound director: Tomohiro Kamiya (FF3 DS, FF4 DS)
    • Developer: Matrix (DQ5 PS2, FF3 DS, FF4 DS, FF4 The After Years)
    • Director: Takashi Tokita (FF4, Chrono Trigger, Live-a-Live, Parasite Eve, FF4 The After Years, Half-boiled Hero series)

Four warriors of light? A witch in the north? A kings princess has been kidnapped? This must be a remake of the original! If it is, then this is really cool!

Visit the website again, it has videos. The 3rd item on the top right navigation has 2 tabs, one shows wandering the world, which looks awesome, and one shows combat. It looks like Animal Crossing meets Zelda in aesthetics, except even better quality wise. Square keep pushing the DS to being more and more awesome. Here's the wandering video, but it's enlarged and low quality so it's best to see it all there.

Some pretty cool screens here, but they're enlarged and so pixelated. You guys really should see the videos I mentioned in the other comment.

When I read that. The first things that poped into my mind were:

    1. Final Fantasy
    2. Ninja Gaiden
    3. Legend of Zelda: The 4 Swords

The more I see of this game the more it appeals to me...

    Shohen Jump Scan:

    No Caption Provided
    Basic translation:

    • Magic points (MP) lost to make room for AP. Simply put, at each turn, each of your characters gain 1 AP. You can keep up the power to use your Magic and your fighting techniques.
    • The most important is the system of Gems (little insets above) to be placed in the crown that change class. Each crown will require several kinds of gems and then, once all are inserted, you increase by one level (maximum 4).
    • But the Gems in question, you will find those on particular enemy combatants, thing is, selling Gems is the only way to earn some money in the game, You can see the dilemma that poses during the phases of leveling up -'Do I keep this gem to increase class, at the risk of keeping the equipment for a moment because I do not have a round, or will I run resell my treasures to the merchant to buy weapons from murderers, even to stay at x grade 1? "

Yeah I noticed earlier today. I was always confident this game was going to be good. I hope it arrives soon enough, it should do seeing as though their other game Nostalgia has.

I want the OST as well, it should be on ffshrine in a few weeks, but I would love an original copy.

Score was fake, real one is 9/8/8/8, 33/40. Still pretty sweet for those who worry about scores.

The game looks great, like a return to the old-school style. I'm leaning on the side of buying this. That said, PLEASE GIVE US OUR V/VI REMAKES!

1UP translated the review and has a few details:

     - Final Fantasy Gaiden: 4 Warriors of Light (9/8/8/8, 33 points): "The story, music, and so on evokes memories of an older age," said one writer, "and it mixes well with the modern gameplay to make things seem pretty fresh." It's a very traditional RPG storywise, in other words -- "it's trite, yes, but there are some cute touches to it," as another put it. Praise also went out to the soundtrack, although some of "the more unique aspects of the gameplay" apparently take getting used to.

Childish? Another? The remakes of the classics were childish? What?

And how does it affect you enough to go all "bummer"? Don't like FF? Don't buy FF. Simple.

calm down... what i meant was that though it is a final fantasy game, it is more childish in the themes it treats compared with it's big brothers for the ps1, ps2.

I think we have too many rpgs giving little cover to more mature themes.

And i'm bummed as there is hardly anyone for the ds.

    Sorry to bust your chops.

I loved the Crystal Chronicles games, but this appears to be completely different.  I've heard it still has the co-op, but how does that work with turn based battles?

Oh man, I am far to lazy to go through half a years worth of info. So in a nutshell, is this a re-imaging of the first game or a remake? Not sure I could bring myself to buy another remake but I love the former.

It's neither, although it has been designed to capture the magic of the early Famicom games in all areas of it's design.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Only thing left is: Broken bridge north of the castle xD

Still, the first is still a great game imo.

I preordered the import about a month in advance and as one who doesn't understand Japanese whatsoever...I don't think I've enjoyed a game so much in years.

I can't wait for the English speaking release so I can finally understand what's ACTUALLY going on. A MUST have for any fan of old school role playing games.
