Jeff's comment during the GOTY podcasts -- "Maybe if this was a few years ago.."

They were talking about how they wanted to have a category called Best Swag and all Jeff could say was "Maybe if it was a few years ago", or something like that. They aren't allowed now to have fun end of year categories or something? The site has grown too large to have fun like they used to?

@lordjezo: The term swag/swagger has changed from what it meant a few years ago. It used to invoke the sense of a very cool, stylish, confident thing. Now it's got a hashtag in front of it and has been watered down. That's probably all he meant.

Yea, if this were, I don't know, 1990 and they were doing that podcast, the suggestion would've been "most totally rad" and Jeff would've said, I don't know, maybe if it was a few years ago...

Brad wanted to rename best style to best swag and Jeff just mentioned that that term is outdated.

your reading way too much into a simple comment. Also check out the game of the year videos and then ask if this site can no longer have fun.

Video game companies send out much, much less swag.

More games come as codes, and not as physical copies, so less of a reason to send out packages of meat and dog tags.

I think this is spot on. Ten years ago there was so much more swag.

Swag is just an outdated term.

Remember when people would say pwned? It's outdated like that.

Pwned has been replaced with Rekt. Maybe find the current equivalent for Swag to use that for the category name.

I associate "Swag" with two things:

1. You go to a thing and the sponsor / company who is holding the said thing gives you something.
2. Lil B saying swag over and over and over again in his songs.

Maybe people still say "Swag" to mean something cool or good in a non-ironic way, but I do not.

The word swag sucks ass. That's all.

Not sure there is an equivalent term right now; or at least not one that's used widely. All I hear now that's in a similar space to those terms is when folks will comment about how "salty" someone is.

As someone who was a teenager in the 90's, and remembers it well, I can say emphatically that no-one used the term "Swag", or "Swagger"in the 90's. That is a term that really only came to prominence in the last decade or so, and was lame almost immediately.

The only word we used that was even close was "Schwag", which was a term for less than quality weed.

Hey now, I'm hopelessly stuck in the 90s, and you'll never hear me say "swag" or "swagger" (00s terms, really).

This thread has all the swagger the site can handle. For real though, it came across pretty benign in the podcast. No reason to get uppity about it duder.

Yeah, you nailed it. 2016 happened and as per the new internet entertainment laws of this year, the CBS big-wigs are making sure that Giant Bomb isn't overcharging their "fun quota" for the year. "Swag" as a category had to go, of course. A shame, really. But in exchange, we got to keep all those times Jeff yelled "FUCK, YEAH" during a cool game sequence.

Can we stop saying "hype" all the time now too please?
