With all the discussion of ham radios and all that stuff, I started to wonder whether there might be a place in the market for a ham radio sim. A very niche place for the hardcore flight/train sim crowd, most likely, but a place nonetheless. I don't the means or knowledge to actually make a game like this, but I've been thinking of some possibilities for fun.

Possible routes for a ham radio game:

  • Some (or all) of the game wouldn't be online, but in an artificial environment like the networks in Uplink
  • Also like Uplink, maybe some career or story elements to finance the purchase and upgrading of all kinds of equipment
  • Alternatively, it could go the Train Sim route and just make every piece of equipment DLC (but that's dumb)
  • Licenses! It could either go the flight sim route, where you actually need to learn all the shit in order to progress, or a system based on XP (allowing for some sort of free-to-play bonus nonsense!)
  • Track-IR support, because why the hell not?
  • DLC trucker CB frequencies and foreign language numbers stations
  • Get your HOTAS on with a USB ham controller (something like the one shown below)

Just wanted to know what you all thought about the idea in general.

Why play a sim when the real thing is within the price range of the average enthusiast? A plane is something well beyond the budget of practically everyone. Entry-level hamming seems less expensive than entry-level gaming.

I already have more games than I have time to play due to PS+ and my brother in laws collection being available when he is at sea. So, no, I wouldn't play a ham radio sim.

It depends on how accurate it is. If I could become fluent in the lingo and with the operations and mechanics of a HAM radio enabling me to actually use one in real life. Then. Fuck. Yes.

I think you can totally transmit data through it, like pretty much any means of communication. See the initial Ham Giant Bombcast for reference on that one. What more do you want? Terrestrial radio will indeed exist in the stead of internet access in the event of an emergency for the foreseeable future.

No, I would watch Vinny, Dave and Drew play the game instead.

Yep, I would. I'd want it to start out as a plain sim, but eventually you'd slowly uncover some bonkers conspiracy that you have to piece together.

Cut to the end... Cthulhu.

If it had multiplayer.

Would also be great in a post apocalyptic setting.

Nevermind this is the answer.

No, it sounds pretty terrible. However I'd love to have a thin, light USB version of that interface I could use as a MIDI controller.

There already is one. Hamsphere. Its a Amateur Radio game/simulation. Nothing like the real thing in most cases but fun when things are quiet. Sort of Skype but no video.
