Poll Choose Your Inquisitor! *Multiple Choice Poll* (284 votes)

Human 46%
Elf 26%
Dwarf 12%
Qunari 22%
Male 35%
Female 37%
Warrior 32%
Rogue 29%
Mage 30%
Harry Hadden-Patton (British Male) 32%
Jon Curry (American Male) 18%
Alix Wilton Regan (British Female) 31%
Sumalee Montano (American Female) 7%

I had initially attempted to create a poll that encompassed every single variable as an available option... but as you can imagine that would have created a ludicrously long list. While I was initially game for the sake of thoroughness, it was starting to mount up and I figured a multiple choice format would make more sense.

Anywhoo, for anyone not familiar with the voice cast selection, Jon Curry should be most recognisable as Zevran from prior DA games, Alix Wilton Regan as Samantha Traynor from ME3 (amongst a couple of minor DA characters from prior games), and Sumalee Montano is probably most recognisable as the Southern Belle Female #3 voice for The Boss in Saints Row IV.

Harry Hadden-Paton I have no idea... This appears to be his first video game credit and his career more so spans outside in TV and Film. Though even in those areas I personally can't say I'm very familiar with him.

As for my own selection, I was initially tempted at the idea of making a female Qunari mage with Alix's voice, because you can't get any more niche than that! However I think I'm still going to roll with my own bias and once again kick off my first playthrough with a male dwarf warrior... maybe a rogue. Jon Curry will be my voice of choice as he's got some awesome cords down that throat of his. Plus, dwarves in this universe seem to all speak with an American accent so it would make more sense.

That said if I enjoy this game as much as I hope I will, then multiple playthroughs will surely be in order! Hell even DAII was able to score two playthroughs outta me. I attempted a third, but... I've had all the Kirkwall I can handle.

Human, male, mage. Planning to employ warriors and use tactical view a ton.

@veektarius: The DA series have always had sub-specialisations, though, so while they both use two-handed weapons, I'm sure there'll be some aspects that'll differentiate 'em all the same. Blackwall likely has his own unique Grey Warden tree for example. It's no different than how DA: O had both Oghren and Sten.

If any class is maybe a little over-represented it's the Mage, as there's four of them! Though of course Mages are probably the most versatile class, and since Mages factor so heavily in the premise of the story, it makes sense that they'd want to insert a lot of opposing opinions into the Inquisition. One's a circle mage, one's an apostate, one's an abomination, and one hails from the Tevinter Imperium so, they all have very different backgrounds and ideologies no doubt.

@yummylee: It's always nice to have a good selection of mages to customize for different purposes. I always felt like Origins was lacking in that department, if you didn't pick a mage. (Also Wynne was kinda boring, so it was usually just Morrigan for me.)

@zeik: I'd say DAII was even worse in that regard, considering Anders was your one and only healer. At least in Origins Morrigan could learn all of the same healing spells, even if she wasn't quite ahead of the curve as Wynne was in that regard.

I suppose that's true, but part of me always disliked giving Morrigan healing spells, since it feels kind of antithetical to her character. (Kind of like making pretty much anyone a Blood Mage.)

Also I realized sooner with DA2 that I liked being a mage the most, so I spent most of my time as one. If you were playing on Normal you didn't really need healing spells that often though.

I didn't actually like any mage in either Dragon Age game. My second time through DA2 (I couldn't finish the first time) I tried playing as a healer because Anders sucked so much. That was pretty funny, because with its templar vs. mages story, it had no idea how to deal with you as basically a celebrity apostate.

I prefer playing a mage in DA2 for story reasons, but it was always weird how they handled you being a known apostate when they hunted down everyone else.

@zeik: I too was a mage for my first playthrough, so luckily enough I was able to make my Hawke a support class while Merrill dished out the damage and debuffs. I know I also had Aveline as my tank, with I think Sebastian rounding out my first playthrough party.

Still, upon my second playthrough I made a warrior that was in-line with the templar way of things and didn't trust mages. Though for the sake of having a healer during the end I decided to take Anders with me after he went all jihad, despite it going against how I roleplayed my character. Sure, you could bump the difficulty down (my two playthroughs were both on Hard), but I shouldn't need to.

I always go human rogue. I've attempted playing as mages in both previous DA's and didn't enjoy it at all.

Wait, really?... So you're right! That's weird, considering he's also like a... spirit or abomination or something. Cool, good to know. I think I'm already envisioning my party anywhoo, with me as a dwarven tank, Sera, Cole, and whichever of the mages specialises in healing. Probably Solas if I had to make a guess.

Hmm. Now I'm not sure. They posted this image on the official Facebook for Dragon Age, but apparently he's a mage in his previous appearance. So either the Facebook page goofed, or his class is a rogue despite the fact that he's a mage narratively. I guess there's nothing stopping a mage from learning to pick locks and use daggers, and it could lead to a cool unique skill tree where he combines these talents, if that's the case.

@hunter5024: Possibly, yeah. Sorta like the Arcane Warrior mage specialisation in Origins, that was essentially a combination of a warrior and a mage -- and was also hilariously over-powered at that.

@yummylee: Yeah, that specialization was a blast to play too. I hope they bring it back. Also Mark Laidlaw confirmed on Twitter that he's a Rogue so mystery solved. I'm pretty sure I'm using Cole now, because a Rogue Mage sounds awesome. Now they just need to make some sort of Rogue Warrior and I'll be set.

I'm gonna go with the standard human male for my first playthrough. I like my dude to be up close and personal so mage is out of the question (though one of the mage classes seems to be more melee focused) and I don't like tanking so it's gonna be a stabby rogue with two blades for the extra uh uh uh uh effect. Dealing high damage via backstabs and sneak attacks is always satisfying. My party is more or less chosen as well. Cassandra can tank, Sera will be the ranged support and Vivienne the healer/elemental mage. I'm of course willing to swap if I don't like the personalities or if I like others better but this is how I'll go into it.

I believe they said that everybody can be everything and the characters aren't as tied to a certain role as they were in the previous games.

If I had to guess I'd assume he'll resemble Fenris from DA2 a bit, who had those weird sorta-magicky abilities that were kinda incorporated into his unique skills, but he still fundamentally played like a Warrior. I doubt they'll give a Rogue actual magic spells.

Always be human.

Its just default for me in the DA games, not saying it is always the best, but it is the option that makes the most sense in DAO with the Arl Howe stuff that happens.

I like that we have more choices for voices. It means you can replay as the same gender and still have a different voice.

Too bad there is no Australian voice option, would be great "I'm sneaking up on him from behind" in Steve Irwins (crocodile hunter) voice.

@brodehouse: Fair enough. Everyone I talk to who plays games like this will always pick the first thing that pops up in the list of options without even thinking about it, which bums me out a little because they're completely ignoring everything else that's there. But I can totally see why something more grounded would be appealing if everyone around you is on a race to be the most weird and obscure.

On the contrary, I think many fans of DAO like myself would have ample reason to feel that way. Granted they might not have much reason to post, but they may have a compulsive urge to click on anything with the name Dragon Age in the title to voice how butt-hurt they are.

The latter since the class is important for the story. It's just not like in DA2 anymore where each character had a special skill tree that more or less defined their role. So you could skill Sera to be a dual wielding rogue if I understood it correctly.

You can feel however you want, but that doesn't mean you need to go around being a party-pooper in any topic remotely related to the subject. If the topic was about whether you're buying the game it would be acceptable, but don't be that guy going around to every topic being all "Hey guys, this game you guys all like totally sucks, right? kbye" Nobody likes that guy.

Decided to bump this on the account of how soon the game is to release, and not to mention how a few have already at the very least gotten to mess around in the character creator courtesy of that EA Access thing.

EDIT: Oh wait... I forget that polls are completely fucked right now... Wonder what that means for a poll that has already accumulated so many votes. Probably that no more votes can be cast? /sigh Oh Giant Bomb.

Cole is nominally the dagger rogue companion, but you can spec the companions however you want. ie. you could turn Cole into an archer rogue or Cassandra into a two-handed warrior if you want.

Cole's backstory is... complicated, but as far as gameplay goes he is a rogue like any other. There is some mageness in his backstory though, which may feature narratively.

Still going to be a Human Male Warrior, cause that is what I always am, and it makes sense narrative wise as I think your character is at the opening event as a soldier of one side or the other. Likely the two hand wielding variety of warrior to be specific.

PS: Mage lovers out there.... in case you haven't noticed, there is no healing spells in this game so no one is "the healing mage". All healing is done via a shared party inventory of healing potions that are limited to I think 8 when the game starts.

For those who are about companions there are 9 that could join up over the course of the game. Predictably you have three of each class. The Warriors are Casandra, Iron Bull, and Blackwall. The Rogues are Cole, Sera, and Varric. Your Mage options are Dorian, Solas, and Vivienne.

Human male warrior, just to keep the tradition from the previous games. Problem is that while in Origin you could spec as a dual wield war and it was tons of fun, in DA2 I found the 2handed warrior to be terribly boring, especially in fight against a single enemy (i remember the duel with the Arishok as a horrible pain in the ass). I don't want to go sword and shield with my main; i would pick melee rogue in an heartbeat if only they got access to 1H sword, axes, maces, etc. but seems like they will only be limited to daggers and i don't like them.

If the game deserve a second playthrough i'll probably pick qunari mage

Unsure why but I have large desire to start this game as a mage and complete dick. Usually first play through I'm super nice, save and help everyone, do what is right. I also usually don't play as mage cause it limits you to always staying away. I think I'm going in first time around doing what I normally don't do. On a plus if I get half way through and realize I've been playing wrong I can start over with good tank and roll through helping everyone.

I'll have to see if the character creator will let me do exactly what I want or not, but so far I'm thinking lady, Qunari, warrior, British. DA:O I played as Darrian Tabris, the male city Elf rogue, and for DA2 I played as male Hawke, warrior, so I'd like to at least change things up a little bit. I tend to be pretty picky about how my characters look though, so if they Qunari options don't lead to something I like, I'll probably end up changing to Elf or Human.

I'm not sure when I'll have a chance to start playing this game, but I feel like when I do I want to play a male dwarf who just acts like a big douche to everybody. Not evil per se, but this annoying little pile of hatred.

Mostly want to do it because it's like the opposite of any character I've ever made in an RPG, ever.

I'm going the Female Qunari Rogue route, because if you're going to let me be a Qunari I'm going to be. I'm not sure if I'm going to be a stabby or shooty rogue, and I may actually end up with a mage, but definitely a Female Qunari at the least

I've already sunk a couple of hours into it with a dual wielding rogue thanks to EA Access. I'm enjoying it so far, even through the combat doesn't appear to have evolved all that much since Origins. This is somewhat pedantic in the grand scheme of things, but it really bugs me how sheathed weapons still hover like 5 inches from your back. The Witcher 2 and Shadow of Mordor have ruined me with their intricate scabbards, I guess.

I need help deciding. I tried all the classes except Archer, because Archer is lame. Two handed doesn't feel as satisfying as DA2. Mage seems to have really limited ability trees, and I don't like the idea of investing in 'fear' based abilities. Plus the AOE spells are tiny, nothing like the fire storm in DA2. Sword and shield seems OK but I'd rather leave the taunting to an AI.

Human is the best race choice, it seems, as that extra ability point is invaluable. For harder difficulties the dwarven magic resistance might be the most valuable though.
