What if buttons on the bottom, as seen in many modded controllers, became standard issue? The return of the black and white buttons on the Xbox Controller? Or just an extra face button?
I haven't run into many games that really require more buttons (Half-Life 2 maybe), but what if at least two bottom buttons were added to controllers. This would probably change all FPS control schemes to make jump, reload or melee down there.
Would games benefit from this, or just force developers to add useless features to fill the up all the buttons? And what kind of features would you like to see included if more buttons were available?
For me, extra buttons would be nice for Bad Company 2, specifically ones on the bottom for easier access for spotting, and perhaps a different button for actions and arming M-COM stations, so I don't keep picking up damn kits when trying to defuse the charge.
Do controllers need more buttons?
Only for things like RTS and MMO's which blow on consoles anyway.
There are some games that I feel like could benefit from more buttons, like God of War 3 or Prototype.
It would mostly just complicate everything though.
There are also ways to artificially add buttons with a control scheme. For instance, having different actions mapped to the face buttons depending on whether or not LT is held down earns you 3 extra right there.
Good points about the BC2 stuff. That game would definitely benefit from more buttons. I guess that's part of why a lot of people like to play it on PC. I don't think the majority of games would benefit though. Maybe next console generation more games will become complex enough to warrant additional buttons. I like current controllers though.

I'm fine with modern controllers. I could do with one button for a quick-save, though, just so you don't have to go to the menu or anything. The Orange Box for PS3 was genius in that respect -- all you had to do was hold down to quick save. More of that, please.
The industry is going with less buttons and more towards natal, wiimote, that magic wand thing on the ps3. I think adding in more buttons is probally going to drive away more casual gamers, I don't think it needs more buttons.
For current controllers, I think they got the forumula right, they don't need more buttons at all.
I thought it was lunacy when they went from the 2 buttons and D-Pad on the NES to the D-Pad, 4 button, 2 shoulder buttons of the SNES. Any more will simply be witchcraft.
Considering how few games actually use a d-pad these days. Replacing that with another set of buttons like a C buttons on the N64 pad could work but, considering the placing right next to the analogue stick, it might not be that good an idea.
I think controllers are pretty good right now. I could see the trigger section having another set of buttons, I could handle that. Other than that, I don't want more buttons. I do want dual analog sticks on EVERYTHING! DS. PSP. Wii. PS3 wand.
I could deal with a few more buttons. Two under the controller would be nice and easy to operate but many more would become too difficult to make them useful. What I think would be more useful is accurate accelerometers, like the sixaxis but actually useful. If you had something like that then you could do simple gestures for some of the actions you do all the time like reloading etc which would mean you could still operate other buttons while you did that.
