Do hardcore gamers play sports games?

A lot of my friends like to brag about how good they are at NCAA 12 or FIFA or whatever, but they aren't exactly what one would call the avid gamer. They play that one game, or maybe even two of those sports games. The kind of people who buy the next annual football or basketball game right away, every single year.

What I'm wondering is, do people who play multiple games over the course of a year buy or play these games? I understand that we may be a minority in the entirety of the gaming community as people who follow game releases and plan our purchases using reviews. However, who are the top level NCAA or 2K players? When I play (usually at a friend's house), I feel as though there are ways to very easily cheat the system in place by these games, I just don't exactly know them. Using a certain only 5 or 6 plays with certain teams may be unbeatable unless you use another certain team with a certain defense. FIFA admittedly feels as though you really have to play and learn what is going on in the game of soccer, but other than that, there HAS to be a way to use whats under the hood against those people who play constantly.

The topic tittle put me off (Hardcore Gamer) and I was going to make a joke, but the content was good so here Is an answer.

I like tennis games, Virtua Tennis is probably my favourite. I've also been meaning to get into the Basketball games.

I like Madden a lot but I don't buy it every year. I also like basketball, hockey, and baseball games but I haven't played any in awhile.

I consider myself a "hardcore" gamer, even though I despise the term. I can tell you that, in my experience, "hardcore" gamers do play sports games.

I quit buying/asking for annual sports game a long time ago. Now I only play them when my friends want to.

I only buy sports games of the "extreme" variety (SSX and the like) and any game that has Drew Brees as the cover athlete...

Not sure if I'm a hardcore gamer but I like to play NHL and FIFA with friends, and somewhat on my own time, but nothing gets the testosterone going like an even game of FIFA. They're great 2 player local multiplayer games. It helps if you're into sports though, and I hate soccer but love hockey, but can still enjoy playing video game soccer.

If I'm a hardcore gamer, then yes. If not, then I don't know.

That hardcore at the end really made all the difference in telling weather or not you were being sarcastic about the whole hardcore thing. I thought you were serious up till that point.

Anyways, I might as well give some input. I consider myself quite an avid gamer but I play NHL at least 2-3 times a week with friends and/or my dad, and I save stuff like Bastion and Arkham City for when I'm alone.

As in all things, it comes down to the person. I love the occasional sports title, especially the NBA2Ks.

Videogames are cool.

I cannot speak for the masses, but I certainly do, I love the NBA2k series and Madden.

If by hardcore gamers you mean the sort of dedicated gaming in-crowd then yes, quite a few do play sports games. Try not to resort to petty bickering on the forums though, it leads to arguments that nobody wins.

If it's named SSX then yeah. 
 
I don't think "hardcore" gamers fall into the trap of buying annual franchises like Madden though.

Are the Hardcore Games the ones with the HX on the corner of the box? I want make sure I have a game library full of hardcore games because that is how I define myself and don't want to look like one of those casual punks.

I used to. It was called ESPN 2k5 and it was the greatest football game ever.

I wouldn't call myself a hardcore gamer, but I do play sports games. But, I refuse to buy them every year...I'll buy say Madden every 2-3 years.

My friends are the same way though, they buy Madden and like religiously every year when it comes out. It's good for me though, I get to try the new games out and it reminds me how little they change each year and whether or not to skip buying it for the year.

If by "Sports Games" you mean Mario Power Tennis, then absolutely yes.

The title of this thread implies a "hardcore gamer" can't be a sports fan, which is silly. Myself, I love sports and games so why wouldn't I like sports videogames? Of course I don't buy them annually, rather I usually buy a baseball game every few years after the roster is so far removed from who is actually playing anymore, and will also dabble with the odd madden game. Also I enjoyed NBA Street volume 2 quite a bit, and would be interested in getting a new one of those were they to ever come back. What happened to that franchise?

I am pretty sure they do. I play multiple games and enjoy the occasional sports game here and there.

I guess. I like some of the more over the top stuff like SSX and Burnout, although I will also occasionally play the NHL games.

I'm sure avid gamers play sports games too. I just don't hang out with them too much.

Luckily when my friends who don't play a lot of games wants to play, it's gonna be UFC or EA MMA, which are dull but bearable since at least there's something happening that I can actually understand. I can button mash my way through those unlike NHL or FIFA. Team sports make zero sense to me, in games and in real life.

No we do not. Only console gamers play sports games and that says pretty much everything you need to know about how "hardcore" they are.

I was feisty this morning. Plus, he just threw it up there for me. It was like a hanging curve ball. I had to make the most of it.

Yeah I do, though I did not play as many this year, I usually at least try some every year. Sport's games are fun, and yes they can be exploited, but it's not because I understand games better, it's because some are just not very well designed.

I think they might play it.... but not buy into a franchise ever year.

I could see myself mildly enjoying a fifa game, but max of 1 each 5 years though.

actually... i still am good after the 95 or 98 one ... can't remember.

I don't know any "hardcore" gamer that enjoys the usual sports games.

I play video games and some of those are sports games.

The closest I get to buying sports games is either an arcade racer (motorstorm, burnout, need for speed hot pursuit) or SSX.

Sports games are fine but you kind of have to be interested in the sports to begin with.

Does the term "hardcore gamer" even mean anything to anyone < 35 years old? What about "gamer"? The people who use those make playing video games sound like its a full-time occupation. I fucking hate that.

As for the actual question, I'd say that it depends completely on taste.

I'll guess and say tc was thinking of people who play a lot of games and spend hours playing every day. It's not a casual hobby to them. Don't get why people are so touchy about the 'hardcore' term. Anyway, I have tried Madden several times, love me some NFL football, watch it every week, every year, but just can't get into that franchise. Same for other sports titles. Used to enjoy Tiger Woods games a lot and then they got too simish and the putting is fubar, so no more of that anymore either. I'm sure that many avid, 'hardcore' gamers mix in the sports titles though. It's personal preference as always.
