You bought a DS lite now? Shouldve waited for the DSi. Oh well.

The games with marks next to them are my personal favorites
_Advance Wars Days of Ruin (more of a core game than Dual Strike)
_anything in the Ace Attourney series, though starting with the first Phoenix Wright would probably make most sense
Avalon Code (It comes out tomorrow, but it has gotten good reviews and i plan on picking it up soon)
Arkanoid DS (A decent remake of the classic)
Chrono Trigger (I'm actually not enjoying the game that much, but i know i'm in the minority)
_Castlevania Order of Ecclesia (The longest, hardest, and probably best since Symphony of the Night. Dawn of Sorrow would be good too)
Contra 4 (This is definately a hardcore game)
Disgaea DS (There is a ton of gameplay here. If you enjoy it, you could probably play it until your fingers give in to arthritis)
_Elite Beat Agents (DDR for your stylus. Very hit or miss, but try it anyway)
Final Fantasy III and IV (Both are great remakes of the originals)
Izuna or Izuna 2 (For the Roguelike in you)
_Jump Ultimate Stars (Its essentially Smash Bros Portable for People Who Like Anime)
Kirby Super Star Ultra
Mario Kart DS (The best version of Mariokart available)
_New Super Mario Bros (A fantastic 2D mario)
Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword
Pokemon Pearl (not as good as Pokemon Silver, but still great)
Sonic Rush (What sonic games should be)
Sonic Chronicles (Made by the creators of Mass Effect)
Tetris DS (The best version of Tetris available)
_The World Ends with You (Perhaps the best and most unusual game available on the DS)
Warioware Touched (The best version of Warioware available)

There are a bunch of good looking games coming out in the near future too

Along with those others you are picking up, definitely give Advance Wars: DoR a try. Also FFIII is really good too, if you can value gameplay over story in games.

I never used to be a big DS fan.  I had the system for quite a while, but a few months ago I started checking out games from Gamefly and now I understand what all the fuss was about.  My recommendations are...

  • Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride (one of the best games I've played in recent memory; the best game I've played in 2009)
  • Mario Cart DS (so good, it's kind of a requirement like Zelda: Hourglass is)
  • Pokemon Diamond & Pearl (rock-paper-scissors fun; should be real cheap one Pokemon Platinum drops)
  • Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime (fun action/platformer set in the DQ universe)
  • Kirby Super Star Ultra (yeah, it's a Kirby game, but it's also a good game; surprising, I know)

And while I've not tried them (due to my meager skill level with the franchise) I've heard good things about the Castlevania games on the DS, Order of Ecclesia, Portrait of Ruin, and Dawn of Sorrow.

Another game I haven't played but will someday because it seems just so awful (but in a good way) is Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure.  An RPG with a lyrical score that is...well...

GameStop still carries used GBA games, but most of them for outrageous prices (Pokémon Emerald for $25? No thanks).

Do yourself a favor and get a hold of a copy of Anno 1701: Dawn of Discovery.

One of the best DS games, and so few people know it.

Look, i'm going to be frank and honest. These are the games that you HAVE to own. there ae others that you certainly should own, but these are God-damn requirements

Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia
New Super Mario Bros
The World Ends with You

I want to put Jump Ultimate Stars on that list, but since it's an import, thats probably unreasonable.
