So I have this beautiful girl I've become friends with coming over again tonight, and this time ima introduce her to dem video games.

I'm thinking Portal 2 and Limbo. The former is easy, engaging and funny, we have the same sense of humor and she will love Glados, Cave Johnson and Wheatly.

The latter I think would be very sexy and ambient, will go well with the wine and weed, but problem is, it's rather grim and atmospheric, I have no idea WHEN it's ok to go deep and dark with a friend or potential girlfriend. When do you decide to put on a morbid movie or a heavy music album in their company? How do you know it won't creep them out, scare them off or bore them? Argh.... So for now, Portal 2 > Limbo.

I thought about the Bit.Trip games as well as Super Meat Boy but those are rather infuriating after a while, I wanna keep the evening fun and chill. The Trine games would be weird for 2 player coop, it's either 1 or 3 that works IMO. L.A. Noire seemed a good candidate at first because of the allure of crime mystery, but in real-time that game is a shit waste of time.

It's hard to find a good one, and i'm trying to decide whether to do co-op or two players on one singleplayer mode, trying to weigh the pros and cons of each one.

Thoughts?!

I don't know. But the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread was that I want to see a thread where a lady asks for good games to play with a boy.

Boot up a porn movie and try to mimic some stuff they do.

On a serious note ; girls don't like girl-oriented games. You'd be surprised at how interested they would be in Saints Row 3 and Far Cry 3. Don't over-think it. Otherwise it'll look like you planned it and you'll lose points.

I have nothing of value to say regarding the topic, although perhaps a console game may be more approachable than a keyboard and mouse, however an evening of wine and weed just sounds oh-so-classy.

N+ I heard was alright but it's high skill. XCOM is great if you name a group the names of the people in the room and then they decide where to go.

I would say maybe don't coerce her into playing video games at all if she has little-to-no interest in them. And it actually seems like one of the WORST things you could do on a "potential date" in any case.

If she already plays games, and you guys have a playful competition in Mario Kart or something where you're teasing and bumping into one another side-by-side, that's one thing, but a single-player or a co-op game, or if she's not interested in games already, would be awful. You get the silent passivity of a movie without the possibility of cuddling.

Oh and the "type of game for a girl" thing is played out. If it's good, and it's similar tonally to things she likes in other mediums, it's fine. I know a few girls that like CoD, Saints Row, and Gear of War over Mario, Monkey Island, or Peggle.

I'm with @wrighteous86. If she isn't too much into the idea, don't push it. It'll just get weird.

That said, maybe get her to play The Walking Dead? I watched my friend play it after I had already beaten it and I had enjoyed watching. It might be fun to see what kind of decisions she makes.

Eh, I found it pretty fun to give my friend shit whenever he made a choice.

Good point though.

  1. Don't ask yourself "is this a girl-oriented game". Girls have diverse tastes. Some girls like shooters, some like roguelikes, some like RPG's. They're no different than guys. Bring a bunch of them. You might be surprised. Maybe she's already a gamer, and didn't tell you yet.
  2. If she says no, don't bring it up again.
  3. If you really want to date her, let things happen naturally. Enjoy being just her friend for awhile longer. Relationships go easier if you trust each other first, and really enjoy doing non-romantic things together as well.

I second Castle Crashers. It is fun without being intimidating and the art is funny and interesting. I loved playing it with my husband and any other third or fourth friend we could rope into playing with us.

Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light is available on Steam and I remember that being a fun co-op experience. The only thing that might be a little weird is that it is an isometric game (in comparison to being a 2d platformer like Limbo) but I think it's relatively easy to grasp.

If you wanted to do kind of a pass and play experience you could play a game like The Walking Dead Season 1 and each play a chapter with the other person helping out with pointing out objects and conversation prompts and chiming in on what the answers in conversations could be. My husband and I played the game like this and it was very fun. He did chapters 1,3 and 5 and I did 2, 4 and the 400 Days add on. You just have to remember to take everything in stride and be okay with the split second decisions that your other half makes on the fly. You might not agree with everything they do but that kind of makes it a fun learning experience.

That's all I can think of at the moment. If you were also thinking of console games, I could probably come up with a few more. I know that my husband and I really loved going back and playing the re-releases of Streets of Rage II and Turtles in Time on the XBox, and there are a ton of similar experiences on PS3 and XBox.

The good ones do.

Nah, I was just grasping at straws for stereotypical "girl friendly" games, and I thought adventure games counted. It was a weak choice, I admit.

Here's a crazy idea.

You could ask her? Girls aren't mysterious unfathomable creatures, they're people. And just like all other people in the world, there isn't a specific game that appeals to all girls everywhere. You mentioned she as a good sense of humor, that makes Portal 2 seem like a good choice out of the options that you presented. But seriously, just ask her what she likes. In every day life, does she like puzzles? If so, then that's more argument for Portal. Does she like to read? Maybe grab an rpg that she could play, and you could help her through it. Someone above mentioned Walking Dead, that is a fantastic choice if she's cool with zombies. Has she ever played games before? If not, be mindful that using a controller can be hard for people who haven't played console games before, she'll learn it but it might take a little while. So if that's the case, and you want everything to go smoothly, maybe don't pick a game that gives you control of the camera.

Man 5 years ago people might've said Rock Band. Those were better days. Games were fun back then... edit: Oh wait... PC games... Durr... Well then fill in some other Rock Bandish type game or something for my joke there I don't know!

I really have no idea. Getting people (both guys and girls) who don't like games into games is not something I would try to force. And if she's into games then she should be the one you ask, not us.

Weren't you the guy that was afraid of dying alone? Good for you for getting out there and finding a lady friend!

Anywho, my girlfriend is addicted to Minecraft, you can build your own little world together, very romantic. So that's my suggestion. Good luck man, and don't be afraid of telling her how you feel or just straight up kissing her, you gotta show her you're interested early on if you want it to go anywhere!

I dunno about PC but the only games my girlfriend has enjoyed playing with me and asks to play again are N+, RISK: Factions and Perfect Dark Zero. Perfect Dark Zero remains a mystery to me to this day.

On PC she'll play the SimCity or The Sims for hours sometimes if the inkling hits her or, again I have no idea why, Postal 2.

From your OP it seems like she doesn't actively play games herself, so wouldn't Portal 2 be, i don't know... crazy fucking hard? For anyone who hasn't had some basic FPS experience, just moving yourself and the camera separately takes some time to learn. Add that to the total brain fuck of Portals and I'd imagine a night of you just telling her where to shoot and her getting frustrated and bored. Especially if drugs which effect your spacial perception are involved.

Also, GlaDOS is indeed hilarious, but it's not really laugh-out-loud funny, and besides, you should probably hope she'll be laughing at your jokes, not a game's.

Other folk's suggestions like Castle Crashers or other brawlers seem waaaay better for a beginner and a laid back night. Play something where she'll just get it right away and be able to mash on buttons and hopefully win.

I recommend the lego franchise games. I've played star wars, lotr, batman 1 + 2 with my girlfriend, they are fun, the characters are recognizable and there is little penalty to loosing so there's no backseat gaming.

I love the way this community jokes around :P I'd post the same shit on a 'girl advice' thread!

I won't try and explain how while I don't approach girls are extraterrestrial beings, they do, at least when you're new friends, require casual mainstream entertainment, but thanks for the tips everyone, I don't see us playing games at all I think a funny movie is due.

My girlfriend is into Mass Effect and weird anime games and apparently CoD, but just for the multiplayer, and apparently not anymore because they ruined it. With all this said, my girlfriend is the exception to the rule, in the same way that people say that all men are into Gears and CoD and male power fantasy explosion chainsaw put-a-rock-in-a-sock-and-hit-you-with-it and I'm not (though I guess Gears 2 had its moments).

What you're looking for aren't "girl friendly" games, they're "person who isn't really into games" games. I dared to type casual but I deleted it since that term is so loaded now.

And while you guys kick this dude in the crotch for daring to ask, our own social justice warrior Patrick Klepek wondered aloud on a podcast whether Portal 2 "would be girlfriend-friendly enough to play".

@pyromagnestir said:

y u no suggest NEthing including, but not necessarily limited to, Katawa Shoujo? You're dropping the ball here king!

Amusingly enough, I'd say that game is almost more popular with chicks than dudes. Women are more represented in the VN market than most genres.
