Ugh, you know, indie doesn't have to mean hipster. God that look sucks, stupid glasses and beards.
Indie Game: The Movie: An Honest and Important Look at Independent Game Development
A bunch of "elitist hipsters" who make amazing games.@Sooty said:
Wow that bottom picture is so Hipster it should be illegal.
That's the entire documentary. A bunch of elitist hipsters.
What does the word hipster even mean anymore? If you wear glasses, have a beard and do interesting things? What are you even complaining about?
Saw this during the screening tour. It was pretty awesome and the filmmakers are pretty great people as well. Waiting to pick up the DVD with all the extras, but can't wait to see it again.

The film is also about really horrible comment threads like these. It's really worth watching.
It sounds interesting, but I would find it more interesting if they showed at least one indie project that failed (didn't sell well, was a bad game, or was never finished). Not to be mean, but a part of the whole indie development (or any development) thing is failure... I haven't seen it yet, so maybe they do (but from my brief reading of the article it doesn't seem like they do).
Someone let these guys know it's not a requirement to be a thick frame glasses wearing neckbeard hipster to make indie games. It is possible to look like a normal human being and still make the game you want to make.
Been really looking forward to this movie for a while. Cant wait to finally watch it.
Also, holy crap did I not realize how much I missed reading Alex's movie reviews. Great job dude.
Just finished watching it.
I'm about to go buy Super Meat Boy, as it was the only game featured that I have never played.
Bravo!
I can't shake the feeling of this being a very unwelcoming and negative film outside of the SMB bros to the independant scene.
Just finished watching it, and I have to say, it made for great viewing. Gave me a real unique insight into game development. Worth the admission price, for sure.
Not at all. They go very deep into game design and philosophies behind it, it's a big part of the movie.Pretentiousness: The Movie
The featured games obviously are very good, so there is substance behind it.
Unless you just want to be a troll, you're being very ignorant.

Seeing how often and easily that word is being used now, I'm starting to dislike those people more than those who really are fucking hipsters.Being a judgmental asshole on the internet is the new hipster douchebag.
Watched this a couple of weekends ago at the TIFF Lightbox here in Toronto... good movie, but some of the establishing shots are a little too cinematic for the content. That said, I really liked the content, and have a new appreciation for the patience required for anyone working with Phil Fish to release his games. I think in general--most of these indie developers don't seem to be driven by deadlines. They're perfectionists that wouldn't otherwise be able to survive in a big game studio. See this if you can.

@mnzy said:You're ignorant because you put alot of people into one little draw, I didn't say a word about Braid.@Totori said:So I'm ignorant because I don't like braid? dear god, can we please stop with the supposed anti-hipster vitriol?
i hope you do realize that every time one feels it necessary to be overtly critical or dismissive of anything as being 'hipster' (whatever the fuck that means), they're demonstrating their ability to embody that very stereotype.
feel free to call the developers pseudo-intellectual, condescending, or assholes- but that hipster bullshit has got to go. it means NOTHING when everyone has a different definition.
Dear everyone with the balls to insult a game maker,
do something with your life, then you have the right to insult others. If you don't like interesting new games, then read a book.
Fantastic movie, very well made and inspiring.
It was especially cool seeing moments such as when Super Meat Boy came out or when that video of Brad playing it was put up and comparing how I remember those moments to the developers reactions.
I just hope to see more movies and behinds the scene stuff about game development like this in the future.
Showed it to my parents from Steam, my mom now fully appreciates how hard it is to develop a game especially if you're just 2 people working on 1 thing for over 4 years. I feel bad for not liking Metacritic, when it gives these guys some sort of validation, although great to see them loving the video reactions more to Super Meat Boy or Braid.
The most interesting tidbit for me was how Jonathan Blow got depressed because the positive reviews weren't discussing Braid's story, but more the design excellence of the mechanics. He should've understood that reviews weren't going to mention the story as much because of spoilers, and that the story is still treated as one of the smaller parts of a game. But hopefully he realised that the gaming community was enamored over Braid in forums and discussion boards, and is still talked about until now much like an Inception.
Played Fez after watching it, good times :)
The movie is very cinematic but I feel the content is still good. Getting the developers of the most popular indie games all in that time period is is pretty amazing.
This is $10 on Steam, which is a steal. I literally just finished watching it, and if nothing else, it's enlightening about the process when it's just two dudes or one dude trying to make a thing from nothing. Makes me want to buy SMB again for Steam, especially since it's on sale. Or just send those guys an email, saying how much I love their game.
Also, @aurahack that art is fantastic. It wouldn't happen to be floating around teh internets anywhere, so I might steal it for, say, my desktop wallpaper?
Just finished watching the movie and I loved it. I hope to see more movies about the games industry in the future as it fascinates me to no end. I will gladly spend money on them.
