I'm never comfortable sleeping on my back and I've trying laying with headphones and such on my sides and it's never comfortable. No, I think that's part of the problem. It's need of monitors makes it unfeasible as a common use mechanic. I don't think this sort of thing will reach any sort of state of free usability until you could emulate every sense (effectively transporting your conscious) into the virtual reality state.
