Not to be a rumormonger but according to this article on joystiq, will joystiq soon be another entry in the long list of closed video game sites.

'AOL is likely to shutter' Joystiq, reports Recode. Hey, wait a minute... that's us! Well, we may as well handle this the same way we've been covering the video game industry for ten years.

"We do not comment on rumor and speculation," one staffer told us, wishing to remain anonymous, preparing for their lucrative PR career. Others are still trying to figure out next steps. Another anonymous staffer said, "We're still working until we can't."

Sources tell Joystiq that the staff is aware of the closure, but corporate hasn't officially told them, so they are unable to acknowledge anything out of concern that it will cause immediate shutdown. We've reached out for more information. We will update, as we always have, when we know more.

A real shame if true. Joystiq is nowhere near as great as it used to be when Plant and J Mac where there, but it's still far better than kotaku, polygon, etc. GB is really the last beacon of light now.

Their article about it is pretty humorous at least.

Wow, really? I check it out every now and then, always thought it was decent. Had a good sense of humor, never sank too far into sensationalism or clickbait like Kotaku or anything. Bums me out a bit.

I'm going to miss it, they were my go-to site for game news in the written form. IGN and Kotaku have gotten too video-focused for my liking.

The original Joystiq podcast was my favorite podcast ever. Hopefully Ludwig will head over to Polygon and assemble the old band again with Grant & McElroy.

I don't read Joystiq but I do read Massively which I'd guess is affected by this. I wonder where I'll get my MMO news now.

@beachthunder:

I'm kind of the same but then when I go there I absolutely love their content and full in love with them all over again. Personally I think they outdo both Polygon and Kotaku at their own game. Hopefully the people there land somewhere where their talents can be used.

I always thought Joystiq was the best newsfeed type website out there, though I don't find myself looking for that kind of content any more.

Joystiq has been my go to news site for years now. Was a huge fan of X3F while that was still around. Hope all those guys land on their feet. It's a damn shame

Any chance one of the Joystiq employees will land in the open Giant Bomb position?

Why the doubt with Swisher? She's highly respected.

And, yes, AOL exists. You should probably search for the web properties that they own.

I'm doubtful of anything Kara Swisher reports, but considering that Joystiq has actually responded, oh well.

Also, AOL still exists?

Huh, the scuttlebutt a couple of months ago is that the board at Yahoo wants to merge with AOL. If it turns out that AOL is really disappearing then I wonder if the failure to get anywhere on a buyout/merger precipitated this move.

I only know about joystiq from "Massively" and "Wow Insider". Both have been suffering from cut backs in staff but I still like their coverage and will be sorry if they are forced to disappear.

So sad...

It should be Joystiq hooking up with another company while AOL closing down. Can't believe AOL has lasted this long, let alone Joystiq under them.

Now I regret not reading Joystiq more.

Man, that would be a real bummer. Grant, Justin and Ludwig's podcast helped reignite my love of games after falling out of the hobby for a bit. I'll always love the site for that. It's still my go to site for 'press releases copy and pasted as news in blog format' but even then I visit less and less as time goes on. It makes sense but that doesn't make it suck any less.

Hey Ludwig, there is this awesome site that has an opening you might fit.

Yeah, it's weird. Every time I come across articles posted on there, they're great, but I constantly forget to check for new stuff on there.

Joystiq kinda became my go-to for video game news just because of how quick it was just to scroll through and be caught up with news. Sad to see them go.

I never visited but it's a bummer to hear about people losing their jobs. With the walls around pre-release information about games being lowered and the demands (video playthroughs) of consumers being easily met by almost anyone on YouTube it's natural for the number of gaming websites (or the size of each) to lower to the point where it matches the needs of the market.

That's really unfortunate, but not too surprising. It seems like they've had fuck all support from AOL ever since Grant and company left to found Polygon, and they probably didn't have the resources to adapt to the changing landscape.

Their best writers have moved on to more successful projects. It's unfortunate for the people who are still there, but I'm not surprised.

I liked checking joystiq in the past but recently it seems they report on things that are days old at this point. One thing I really hate is them hyperlinking things that just go to the search function on their site instead the actual thing on youtube or xbox live marketplace or whatever the article would be about.

Too strange, especially as I just saw their little comedy panel at PAX South this weekend.

If true, at least they are going with the same spark of humor they came in with.

Very sad news as Joystiq is still my go to video game news site. Kotaku hasn't been readable in years (sorry Patrick) and Polygon is too far up its own ass for me to care. Honestly, Giant Bomb isn't a great place for just run-of-the-mill news. I don't know where I'll go for that stuff. Well, there are a ton of podcasts out there which just read and review the week's news so that's an option.

That's the most succinct way to describe Polygon I have ever heard.

Also, I liked Joystiq. But unless there was a story linked from somewhere else I rarely checked it. I read it everyday for about a year when they're iPhone app worked (until about 18 months ago), then they killed it and said "hey the website works great on mobile", which was half true. That was it for me after that...
