Last month we saw the release of a bunch of games, some of which are not only amongst the best this year, but the generation so far. In particular:

  • Super Mario Galaxy 2
  • Red Dead Redemption
  • Alan Wake
  • ModNation Racers
  • 3D Dot Game Heroes
  • Lost Planet 2
  • Alpha Protocol
  • Blur
  • Split Second
  • and more.

Perhaps best of all is that from the above list, only two are sequels.

So, was May the best month in gaming ever?

It might be the best May in gaming history, but I'm not so sure about the best month ever.

Like the previous months this year, it was all games that were supposed to be released in Winter, but were pushed back to prevent them to compete against MW2 and NSMBWii.

I remember this one time Modern Warfare 2 came out.  It was a pretty good month.

But ya this month was solid.  Although I've only played 3 of those games.

So December is the best month ever, and it was so awesome that it gave its games to other months so they could hope to be just as awesome?

I haven't bought any games released this month and I won't, except for maybe Split/Second when it is £15 or less.

Also, isn't Red Dead Redemption a sequel?

Why would a game get pushed back 8 months to dodge competition? If they were going to do that, why weren't they released in February or March?

Haha, shit. I just had a quick glance over the list for numbers at the end. I even own Revolver.

But still, chances are if you're into platformers, action adventures, shooters, RPGs, kart racers, arcade racers etc. you had something to look forward to last month.

That's a great list of games, certainly a good month, but you'd have to see a list of game releases by month over the past 30 years to really say how it compares to other months. I for one, don't feel like doing that, so I'll just say yes.

I don't know about "best month in gaming history" but it's definitely been a pretty strong one.

Not a direct sequel. It's a spiritual successor.

Nope. Not even close. May '98, September '98, November '98 and that whole year in general are still untouchable. Here are the games that came out in a period of ~35 days (Oct 31 to Dec 3)

  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Grim Fandango
  • Half-Life
  • F-22 Total Air War
  • Railroad Tycoon 2
  • Thief
  • Ocarina of Time
  • Baldur's Gate
  • Myth II

And I'm not even counting all the other good games of Blury quality that came out in the same time period.

Yeah this month has been pretty epic. Though June of 2006 was pretty memorable for me.

I wonder if people thought that Half Life would be as good as acclaimed today?
