Does he tend to be accurate with this kind of stuff?
Pachter weighs in on potential next gen console pricing.
No way they won't be the same price.
There's just no way 2 consoles that are more or less the same with more or less the same games and same kind of services are going to be priced differently when both brands are neck and neck.
Sony couldn't get away with this with the PS3 after they trounced the competition for 10 years so Microsoft certainly couldn't get away with it either. No matter what the cost of producing the console, whoever has to cut on profit will do it to match the other company's price.
Pachter has been all over the map with his estimates, but in this case I think he might be right, or at least pretty close. The stuff they are putting into those machines isn't cheap so I think the hope of a $250 console probably isn't going to happen unless they sell them at a loss.
Well, we'll probably know the answer soon. E3 is only a week away.
Sounds plausible. MS will let Sony come in cheaper and then go heavy on the subsidized plans.
There's getting to be so many variables that it all feels like guess work.
(I might guess 50 more for each though)
Anything under $399 and I'd be happy to be honest.
I concur.

It's only a $50 difference. Not $300 like last gen. I bet that extra $50 from MS is for the Kinect too.
Maybe the price difference rationalization is because of the Kinect? Having not read the article I'm just guessing here.
If old people are good at anything, it's predicting costs of things.
Your console is more affordable? Ours has 6 months free of our premium services*
*: So long as you pay for 2 years upfront.
A $399 price tag seems plausible. I'm a bit curious about what Pachter's justification is for thinking the PS4 will come in $50 under that because I was expecting Sony to actually be a bit higher if the two prices weren't identical.
Personally, I'm expecting something more around the $449 range.
I can't fathom anyone suggesting the PS4 being $349, that's $50 more than they are selling 7 year old PS3s for, it's going to be atleast $399, I can see where he is coming from on a material cost side, but they will add in extras; a game, a year of PS+, a bigger HDD, something, if they put it out at $349, people will immediately start comparing it to the Wii U and it will be perceived as a lesser offering than the XB1 by the general public.
I don't see why he would think the PS4 would be cheaper. (I know I know, the Kinect camera but I don't think that maters as much)
So far it sounds like the PS4 is going to be a tad more powerful.
With that DDR5 RAM and well, it's Sony.
But who knows, maybe Sony is willing to eat a little more on console sales, doesn't sound like them though.
I'd say they'll be the same price or the PS4 will be $50-$100 more.
You know, I was in the "$399 on both of them" camp for a while. However, looking overall at the parts in the machines as well as the services attached, I'm not thinking that it's too low of a number. We're going for a "too good to be true" scenario here.
I'm guessing $499 for Xbox One and $449 for Playstation 4.
Xbox 360 was 400$ and the 20GB PS3 was 500$. That why i say equivalent models. I think the 360 had a core model with no HDD for cheaper and Sony had their insanity moment at FIVE HUNDRED AND NINETY NINE US DOLLARS for the 60GB model.

I concur.
It took like two years for the PS3 to get to $399 and that's when I got one. So I too would be glad if it started below. Don't know how likely that is, though.
I sincerely hope Pachter's right about the prices, but those prices seem really hard to believe given everything that will come attached.
If the PS4 is $349, I'll eat my hat.
I'm betting $399 minimum, and for the lowest SKU if there is more than one.

I think "YOU SHOULD GET TWO JABS TO PAY FOR THIS AND ONE OF THEM SHOULD BE PROSTITUTION!!!" comment left me imagining the PS3 costing more than it did I guess.
