Ok so, got Oblivion who knows how long ago, really REALLY love the game BUT have never finished it, or really ever got close. What always happens is I get side tracked by something and get off the main quest and then never get back to it and i end up playing something else in the end.
So today i started it yet again. Now i want some general hints and tips. No spoilers but just things thatll make me think that i can do it this time!
Im playing on 360 and im rolling as a Redguard, im really into playing as a warrior, not majorly into the magic side of it and sure as hell no good with a bow.
So, what are your hints and tips for it???
Starting Oblivion AGAIN! Hints and tips!
Sneak. It's almost invaluable in Oblivion.
Also, getting good with a bow is going to skew the chances of survival greatly in your favor.
Get a bow and a bunch of arrows. Then get the longest sword you can find. Go to Umbra's ruins, hop on the broken pillar next to where Umbra stands. Kill her since she can't reach you.
Bam, one of the best, if not the best sword in the game.
Sadly you don't have a PC, I could have recommended some mods.
Also, sadly, you're not a thief/bow user. That's one GREAT way to play the game (at least on PC)
1. Advance in the mages guild.
2. Enchant pants, shirt, rings, necklaces, and gloves with 10 shield for constant effect 80 shield. This frees up inventory so you don't have to carry around heavy armor and shit, also makes you indestructible.
3. Create 100 charm for 1 second on touch spell. It will become your ultimate weapon against fuckups involving guards.
4. Create a paralyze for 1 second on touch spell. Helps even the odds against groups of enemies. Doesn't require too much mana.
These are must haves in my opinion. Even if you're not playing a mage, these spells don't require all that much mana, and greatly help in close combat, which is what you'll be spending most of your time doing.
" Sadly you don't have a PC, I could have recommended some mods. Also, sadly, you're not a thief/bow user. Put the skills you want to focus on as secondary skills (so you are constantly maxed out with your skills in relation to your level) and put the skills you want to use for just leveling up as primary (the ones you dont use as much).
It's really important to realize that you are always working AGAINST leveling in this game, since everything becomes harder when you level up.
If you have a halfway decent PC.. I'd really recommend giving that a go. There are a bunch of fantastic mods that can drastically change the game if you want them to.
I'm in the midst of playing it again myself (along with Fallout 3 again). Like you, I never finished it and while I really loved it, it was pushed aside by something else and then forgotten. I think I fell for Crackdown back then and that controlled my life for a few months (damn orbs). I picked up the PC version though and am having a grand time modding it out the wazoo while adventuring my way through Cyrodiil. The game is still a lot of fun, although I believe that Fallout 3 is better. It's not the setting or story, but the mechanics in Fallout 3 that I think are much better. I look forward to an Elder Scrolls V, but fear it might turn out to be an MMO. I have nothing against MMOs it's just I don't want to see every great RPG franchise turned into another pay-to-play game.

The Oblivion stat system is absolutely horrible. It's probably the main reason I would recommend Oblivion on the PC over the console.
When you get the priest guy, (I think his name was Martin?) and you're escorting him to the Blades HQ, he's basically an immortal companion. He can't die and there isn't a time limit for the escort. So I finished a lot of the side missions with his help.
My tip for playing Oblivion is to just play. Don't worry about min/maxing your character. Don't feel you have to play a particular class. Just play and have fun. Everything else will fall into place. I've played through twice (once on 360 and once on PS3) and never ran into the leveling difficulties some people have. As far as the base game, the guild quest trees were actually the star of the show. The actual main storyline quest was quite dull. However, I would heavily recommend the shivering isles expansion. It's new main quest was much more entertaining.
At any point in the game you can get the best sword in the game. It's called Umbra and you can get it off of Umbra in some ruins I think. Turn the difficulty down and kill her and take her armor and sword. You can get Ebony Armor and the strongest sword in the game early in the game. I forget where so Google it.
You know how at the beginning most swords have an attack of 2 or 1. Umbra has an attack of about 11 and that's starting out.
" @armaan8014 said:The one in Kvatch? Another great way to play the game - DON'T GO TO KVATCH. It's true, if you don't go there, There will be no oblivion gates at all, and the world will always be beautiful and realistic and fun! Once you're done with everything you can do (all side quests, exploration etc) , go to Kvatch and start that SOB storyline :)" Sadly you don't have a PC, I could have recommended some mods. " @Sir_Ragnarok said:Just give it time and your aim will improve. I also thought the bow combat was awkward at first but got used to it. Using the bow and maxing Sneak is very useful in the game. You can take out a few enemies before they even know you're there. Also, when you get to level 10, go to the Nocturnal Shrine, do her Daedric Quest and get the Skeleton Key. It's basically an unbreakable lockpick that improves your lockpick skill by 40 or something like that. That way you don't have to worry about lockpicks anymore and it makes a lot of quests way easier." Sneak. It's almost invaluable in Oblivion. Also, getting good with a bow is going to skew the chances of survival greatly in your favor. "mmm, shit about the bow, i can manage to hit a slow moving crab from fair close range. lol. "
Also, complete the Thieve's Guild as quickly as possible. Last quest is a bit of a pain but the entire quest line is actually pretty fun. You get the Gray Cowl of Nocturnal which makes the game instant awesome.
" Definitely think about playing as a sneaky character. The Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild have the most interesting quests in my opinion. "Can't agree more here.
Fighter's Guild quest SUCKED big time. I got so tired of going into caves by the end of that, and fighting trolls. Seriously, who designed the trolls in this game?
" My tip is play Morrowind instead, it's much better. "Haha, can't really disagree here.
My problem is that I downloaded Morrowind after I played Oblivion, so I was so confused when I started out.
Look up the glitches in this game that basically give you infinite magic. Duping glitches ect...
Create this spell:
10 fire damage
10 ice damage
10 lightning damage
10 magica damage
100% weakness to fire for 1 or 2 secs
100% weakness to ice for 1 or 2 secs
100% weakness to lightning for 1 or 2 secs
100% weakness to magica for 1 or 2 secs.
Also make everything have an area effect of about 10ft. (This spell basically rapes anything in the game. The damage is multiplied on each successful hit.)
Enchant your sword with something similar, but add soul trap for 1 sec. (probably can use 5 magica instead of 10). You can also do 100% weakness to poison if you want to bother with all that.
Get the two invisibility spells. Chameleon and the other one (Ghostwalk or something. It's been a while).
Save the Oblivion Gate stones that boost your magica by 50. (Dupe them and attach to everything you where).
" I nostalgia'd hard. Oblivion is epic. I gotta start that game up again. "Same, I'm actually playing it right now. Started a new character, an Argonian thief.
Oblivion is just one of those games where the mere mention of it will make you want to play it again.
