I picked BF3 because I think it is the best game of this generation, but if you meant to pick a game based on its influence on the genre and on gaming in general then COD4 is clearly the most influential.

CoD 2 is the sole reason why the 360 was so successful at launch. It proved what the Xbox was capable of graphics wise and reborn the CoD franchise into how we know it today (IW engine, regenerating health, etc). But out of that list I'd say CoD 4.

Brink

I'm not joking, I don't typically like shooters; TF2 and Brink are the only two I enjoyed this gen (or any gen really) and since TF2 isn't really console, Brink wins by default even though I did actually like it.

Of those included in the poll, Call of Duty 4.

Hell Call of Duty 4 would still get my vote no matter what other games could be included.

Killzone 2's multiplayer was pretty fantastic and original when the game came out. It is a very important omission for a multiplayer focused poll.

I know it hasn't come out yet, but I think Bioshock Infinite will definitely be my favorite shooter this generation. Personally, Mass Effect 2, Dishonored, Uncharted 2, and Borderlands 2 are my favorites. None of which are on this list. So, my vote is for Call of duty 4: Modern Warfare, since it's the most influential. I really couldn't say, definitively, what's the best though.

Call of Duty 2 is the best Call of Duty released this generation.

Bad Company 2, probably. Hell of a game.

It's CoD 4. So influential and great in its own right. I think it's easy to lose sight of that because of how iterated on it has been.

Black Ops II for sure.

Gears 3 no doubt.

I played bad company 2 the most, by far.

But I don't really like the exp based progression of modern shooters since CoD4. Really turned me away from the fps genre.

I'd vote Halo 4 and BadCompany 2 in terms of multiplayer.

The OP later said that this was supposed to be for multiplayer shooters. I almost made the same mistake that you did.

Multiplayer either a Halo game or TF2.

Bad Company 1 was my favorite console shooter this gen.

I spent around 200+ hours on Bad Company 2 so I'd pick that.

Gears of war 3 for sure.

CoD 4 was a pretty damn good game even from a single player perspective. But as for my favorite shooter from this generation I'm gonna say Gears of War for being a bloody brutal awesome game.

Not to mention Killzone 2, he missed A LOT.

From that list, probably Halo: Reach. It's the only multiplayer shooter I've ever played more than a few hours. Had fun in the little time I spent.

(But seriously probably Cod 4.)

I had way more fun in Left 4 Dead than those games.

Having put 20 days of playtime into it, I would say Modern Warfare 2

The list of choices is... um... lacking.

I'm inclined to go for either Resistance 3 or The Darkness II because I'm contrarian (and they're also great games in their own right).

Halo ODST is my favorite hands down, but MW1 is undoubtedly the most influential.
