None , its a bullshit term made by hipsters journos to undermine any game they dont like.
Except that it was made up by Clint Hocking. Lead Designer on Splinter Cell and Far Cry 2. Source
@spaceinsomniac: I'm actually appalled that Tomb Raider didn't straight up have a cry button so I could really roleplay Lara properly.
@spaceinsomniac: good point
"Jack, you got to get to the red glowy base of doom before the world is destroyed!" "Understood."
*Proceeds to inspect every nook and cranny in triplicate for secrets and bonuses.
Yeah. Often the moment of greatest urgency in the story is the cue to the player that the point of no return has come up, and therefore player should take this time to do everything but proceed further down the main story until ready to see the concluding sequence and ending.

Mass Effect 2 had a neat way of going about this. There was the "now's a good time to complete any unfinished business" moment, and then there was the "there's no going back after this" moment. If you left any optional quests at the first notice, you could go back and do them. If you did them after the second notice, you could actually get a worse ending because you screwed around too much.
Of course, I'm referring to when the collectors capture the Normandy crew. If you wait too long after they've been captured, more of them will be dead when you finally get around to rescuing them.
I've noted such in my Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance review. I think.
