Entertainment historically has not suffered during both minor and sever recessions.

I've wondered this for a while. It seems as if people don't have the money to go out anymore, so they would just buy games and sit happily at home playing the games. But the more I think about it, people may not have money for games anymore if the recession last for much longer.

In the entertainment business, only books and tv will be effected. That is all.

In a major sense, no. At least, their are no signs to prove so. If anything, I'm spending more time on games, thus more money. I don't have the cash to go out every other day.

I read an article where it showed that the average play time per day is going up during the recession (according to Nielsen)

What about Japan's recent 25% drop off in sales. I think something like that is destined to happen here in America and Europe.

Yeah, but I think the trade-in and rental market may go up, as games get shorter and more expensive.

That's a combines effort of economic issues and lack of high-profile titles this year such as Smash Bros. When those numbers remain after Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, ten yes, worry about the Japanese.

I don't think it's a question of will, but of how badly. It's one of the reasons this console generation is going to last so long; people just aren't willing to drop $300+ on a new console.

Of course the recession is hurting the videogame industry right now. Companies are feeling massive strains, many have had share prices plummet, sales of videogames have been steady but unspectacular.

The recession hurts the quality of video games made by companies who have been hurt by the economy. Constant layoffs of developers and designers for a project causes the end product to be poorly made.

Tell that to Sony...

And by the way, didn't you just buy a PS3? I remember reading a post saying you did earlier this week.

I think it will benefit.
People getting fired nothing to do those with a console, their outlet and something to do will be that, I know it's a thing about finances but if people are selective it'll be fine, and think it'll thrive. Even now it seems like when a game comes out, they come out with bursts of other games, this year alone has been a great one for gaming with something for everyone.

Already is hurting the game industry, if you look at recent sales.

Or maybe gamers are just suddenly bored with everything coming out.

More games will probably come out for less then $60 and you might see some really great sales but in the long run the recession won't hurt the video game industry.

Officially, No. The industry will refuse to admit it is being hurt.

Unofficially, fuck yes, everybody is hurting right now.
