Only if they can make the colors blend well... I think lighter gray would work better. Comicvine hurts my eyes, so I hope if they use white, it's not that bad.

Yeah, it will be just an option from what I've gathered. When the site launched there were people who didn't enjoy the black look and wanted something brighter, on the other hand there are obviously people who won't like a white look.
I'm actually curious and looking forward on how the advertisements will turn out, how they will be integrated, what sort of advertisements we will be getting and the impact it will have on the general user experience of Giant Bomb.
