John Romero's Making a New Shooter

It's been more than a decade since Daikatana, but John Romero is returning to shooters. On Joystiq's most recent podcast, the DOOM co-creator revealed his future plans.

Romero didn't divulge many details, but said the shooter is among "several" games he's working on right now.

And hey, while we're at it, maybe we can convince Tom Hall to start working on Anachronox 2.

I played Daikatana for the first time this week. It's not THAT bad with the fan 1.3 Patch.

Several games kinda sounds like phone games.

The tragedy we experienced today was given a new lease on life. RIP Robin Williams and amazing to see John Romero going back to his roots. I'm sorry but Doom and Quake are still hands down the best two video games on Earth. It is debatable if Quake 3 is better than Quake but Quake had Team Fortress and nothing was better than QuakeWorld Team Fortress (the TF2 babies have no idea what they missed!) and the best most skilled Death Match made. Rocket Arena for Quake 3 is second to Team Fortress for QuakeWorld.

This man and his team have made video games the way they are. Daikatana was a game and Ion Storm was a company and that is in the past, as is his legacy at ID Software.

Great news!!! Please be Quake 3 Arena remade in 2014. Just like include everything we haven't seen in the past decade+ for amazing gameplay/shooting/Quake.

@steveurkel: You need to read Masters of Doom if you think Romero was the primary force behind Quake.

I remember Daikatana, wasn't very well received. It's been a long time since then and a lot has changed in the industry. Does Romero have what it takes to make a game in 2014?

To be serious, he has started an FPS game a number of times since Daikatana, I think one time he even got as far as mentioning the name, but he has never finished one. I'll believe it when I see it

In fairness to Romero, that campaign wasn't entirely his idea. That was Mike Wilson, apparently (the same jackass responsible for the stunt where people in chicken suits jumped on stage during the VGAs to steal the mic from Ken Levine).

I hope this is a hint at returning to work on Doom, remember that check in a few weeks back at ID...

I doubt this but I want Romero to be successful.

I hope he knows how to make a game this generation will play. Take Duke Nukem for example, people that made games back then make a game that was popular back then.

The problem with Duke Nukem Forever (well, one of them, at any rate) was that the game was built on fourteen years of disparate ideas by a development team headed by people that didn't know how to lock down a list of features. It was as much a managerial failure as it was a design failure. Feature creep is the worst enemy of all software projects, and it took over DNF like the Venom symbiote.

I wish I could care. I love the games that he used to help make, but that was 20 years ago and I just don't have the heart to give a shit about anything this man's done in the recent past (other than being in that Text Adventure documentary a while back).
