REVEAL YOUR DARK SECRETS RORIE!

Why does everybody refer to him as Rorie and not as Matthew or Matt? Even his forum name is just "Rorie". Does he actually have a first name or is Matthew just made up to hide something? Is everybody scared that he might find it offensive if somebody calls him by his first name? Is it because the rural austrian abbreviation of his name is "Hias" which sounds pretty stupid? Why? WHY? WHYYYYY?!

When I was in middle school there were four kids in my class with my name. To make it easier on everyone I started going by my middle name and it kinda stuck. Haven't been called by my first name since.

I can imagine the story @rorie tells would be similar.

For what it's worth, Rorie can be a first name too.

I don't know if this is the reason (since I imagine Rorie was there long before any of the others), but didn't the Whisky Media offices have like 3 or 4 Matts?

I dunno, sometimes surnames just fit better. One of my friends always gets called by his surname, it just feels awkward to use the first name.

Some people just get called by their last name, especially if it's unique. Also, if he was just "Matthew" or "Matt" that would have been confusing when Kessler was around.

Ya in my case I get flipped back and forth alot. Because people knew me in highschool also know 5 others with the same name so last name gets used alot around them.

Shared names can be an issue. Regrettably, I'm "Mikey" around my family, because my uncle is "Mike". I was "Mike" in grade school because there were other "Michaels" around, and now I'm "Michael" at work because I know too many guys who go by "Mike" here. Only a few people call me "Mennuti", though.

Matts have it worse, though. I knew three Matts who were best friends in high school.

I dunno, it's one of those things that don't really have a reason. He's also the only one, right? Everyone else is called by their first name. Maybe, it's also because we don't see him that much on video/audio so they probably call him Matt most of the times, we just don't pick up on that.

My dad used to go as "Bo" which is only the first two letters of his last name. It was probably because some people couldn't pronounce his first or last name correctly.

As someone who's been around since the Gamespot days, I can confirm that there were several people on staff who were always referred to as their full name like "Ryandavis" (to differentiate from Ryan McDonald, I'm sure) and "Mattrorie" where other people were referred to as purely their first name, like "Rich" or "Carrie". This was likely due to their being multiple people with the same name. Eventually, however, Mattrorie just became "Rorie"

In Scotland David is a common name, so its either Dave, David or their surnames. I have a friend named David Blair, so we called him Blair he hates being called David nowadays. Another David called Sommerville....yeah we were gonna use that so instead we called him Sommy.

Friends brother was called a really poncy name so he rather be called Smithy which Smith was his last name.

Christopher was super common, and if we did called them by their first names it would be Chris, we had Chris Griffin known as Griff, Christopher Harvey we just called Harv or Harvey, Christopher Norevill called him Norevill, Chris Patterson called him Pat or Patterson...but we had a Pat so we sometimes said Chris Pat. Chris McKlearnon was McKlearnon...or Auburn he had "Auburn" hair. Christopher Hughes called him Hughsey.

All in one class man all those Christophers!!!

I was the only Richard so I kept my first name.

A group of my friends in high school called me by my surname. I liked it, my name is/was cool so I had no issues with it. Some guys just seem to do this, and I say guys because with my female friends, we never used surnames. Can't say it doesn't happen, it just didn't in my experience.

ha! my sympathies. but i'd just embrace it. chalk everything up to being a 'Newb.' can't blame you for anything- you're just a 'Newby!' you don't know any better!

and as far as @rorie goes- I BET THAT GUY ISN'T EVEN A REAL 'MATT.' I BET THAT GUY'S A GREAT BIG PHONEY.

Mostly I think it's because girls have always caused me Rorie - I guess it's funner to say. There is a story similar to @oldirtybearon, though, in that I had a class in college with 30 people, six of whom were named Matthew. It was an exceedingly common name when I was growing up. But yeah, mostly because girls prefer saying it!

At this point it's more odd because whenever I meet someone for the first time, the "Do you prefer Matt or Matthew?" question almost always pops up. I really don't care either way! Not sure why people think there's a big difference.

OR MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE THE TEAM OF PUG-ENGINEERS THAT PILOT THE MECH KNOWN AS "RORIE" CAN'T PRONOUNCE "MATTHEW" CONVINCINGLY. IT'S THE SOFT "TH" SOUND. I KNOW YOUR GAME, PUGS. I'M ON TO YOU.

I have the same first name and there are like 5 other dudes at work with the same name, even at a pretty small company.
It seems to be pretty common around here (Germany- so it´s the German version of Matthew)

Yeah, so I guess you need some way to distinguish all those Matthews.

Man I know what it's like to have two potential first names as your full name. Everybody is always like "oh you have two first names!" and I have to hold myself back from saying "you should shut the fuck up because I heard that 10,000 times already today!"
