If you take your AV seriously then either TrustPort or GDATA, both use a Dual Engine approach (meaning they use two licensed engines to actively scan and protect at the same time, so what one misses the other should and often will pick up). They both rate highly at AV Comparatives, which is the go to site to go to for AV tests.
Best virus protection
" Avast is easy to use and maintain, it maintains itself. Some ppl like microsoft essentials. "I use Avast and Spy bot search and destory, but just go with Avast its great and free.

I also want to say to the thread, kaspersky is superior, second place for most reviews. But of course you have to pay for it.

If you're wanting to not spend money and keep your mothers computer safe go for AVG.
Never had any problems when I used it.
" @Nocall said:I set up a Ubuntu machine for my mom a couple of years ago, and she hasn't had any problems with it - actually the opposite, since her sight is bad and getting worse she's had a lot good use of the built-in zoom function in compiz (default: windows key+mouse wheel). I've never had problems with the stuff I expect problems with on linux machines (USB devices, NIC's, graphics cards, NTFS partitions, getting Windows programs to run in Wine), but getting the sound to work has been a pain in the ass almost every time. Any sound card that wasn't a Soundblaster Live! from 1998 has required lots of googling and ALSA, OSS and Pulsewhateveritscalled config file editing." @AlexW00d said:I'm on the newest version of Ubuntu 11.4 or whichever and I have never had a problem, even with previous builds. I had MSE for a while, but when it comes down to it, my computer was better protected with AVG. I made the switch, and couldnt be happier. AVG 2011 free is running on my gaming machine and my laptop. :D
