I've been rockin' a mac for awhile, so I'm a little out of the loop regarding PC protection. My mom just got a new PC. She isn't very computer-savvy. So she needs good protection that doesn't involve much maintenance. Thanks for the help!

I rock a Mac as well (prefer it over Windows) but on my Windows gaming rig I run McAfee Anti-Virus Suite and am quite happy with it...

You could try her out on Ubuntu or Gnome 3, the biggest problem for new Ubuntu members is the fact that they have only used Windows, this is a free way to keep your mum 100% safe.

Microsoft Security Essentials is the best light weight option. I used to use AVG but it's very invasive with it's warning messages and how many system processes it likes to run. Going the way of Norton. MSE should be fine. It's free, easy and non intrusive.

Microsoft Essentials is the ONLY anti-virus anyone needs. It's made by Microsoft, for windows. Is free and works fine. It's small and works perfectly. There's no reason installing a 3rd party anti-virus.

MSE has rated very well (better than a lot of paid suites) It sits quietly without slowing your system down and doesn't bug you every 2 minutes and updates with Windows update. Easy. So... I'm with the majority of the thread. MSE!

Because you don't need to be computer savvy to work your way around it? It's no more complicated that Windows.

It seems either Avast! or MSE are your two best choices by looking through the comments.

because you do not need to be computer savvy to use ubuntu, if you set it up for what she want to use it for, it is very easy to maintain, which i thought was the idea.

My dad wanted to stop paying for Norton so I hooked him up with MSE. It's free, highly-rated, resource light, and well integrated into Windows since its made by MS. That's my recommendation.

Maybe if you  put 9.04 or 9.10 on it, but everything Canonical has released after that has been buggy and crash-prone as hell.

I use Avast mostly because it's simple and free, but also because the computer lady tells me when it's up to date and that makes me feel like I'm living in the future :D

Use Microsoft Security Essentials.  It's perfectly adequate for any normal users needs and is free for any legitimate Windows Vista or 7 user.

Microsoft Security Essentials works just fine, I switched to it from AVG because AVG has been total garbage as of late.  It's free, it works, and it doesn't annoy you.  So I'd say it's pretty good.

I work IT for a university, and we always install/suggest Microsoft Security Essentials for all of our clients. It's a very thin client. It has the most intuitive UI. It offers phenomenal protection. Scans are fast. And it's free.

I've been dissapointed too. but i switched to them a year ago because micrsoft security essentials failed me also. lately there has been this malware attacking me from MSN, and AVG refuses to pick it up and snuff it.

If you have Comcast, certain plans let you get Norton security for free for 5 PCs. Used it for years and never had serious viruses, scans clean up the rest.
