I was heavily involved in a 450 page creationism-evolution "debate" that made the forum's (another forum, not this one) database go sketchy and has made me permanent enemies on the Internet. They no longer allow any discussion of said subject on those forums. Which is fine since ostensibly the forum is for ESL teachers living in Korea and I was getting pretty tired of trying to be rational in the face of mind-numbing, blind adherence to dogma anyway.

I used to argue about religion on Facebook. I kept that shit up for a solid year before I realized that fighting with Christians on their own forum is super douchey.

I only got into one major flamewar, and it was really stupid. I wrote a review for a TV that I bought from Best Buy, and this other guy on there obviously disagreed with me on several points. He then decided it would be fitting to call me an idiot, and several other nasty names. I didn't respond in kind, but things got a little heated. Since then, I tend to tread lightly in forums. Nothing is more aggravating than fighting with someone when you know you will never win because the internet is the ultimate un-inhibitor. Oh, that and I had someone threaten to hack my computer when I was trolling a vampire fan fiction chat room back in the day. I have no idea how that one got so bad so quickly.

I think if I did I would probably stop posting online, because life is to short to spend your time caught up in internet drama. I have gotten into a few arguments though, and I'm an infamous last word freak, so those went on a long time, but I think there's some value in arguments.

#105 Posted by mandude (2669 posts) -

I was banned on the Elder Scrolls forum for suggesting that someone should be shot. With a gun. In my defence, it was entirely in jest, lacked any drama, and the ban was unjustified.

I debate a lot, on other forums, but not dramatically. It's all in the name of education and enlightenment.

Well sort of I guess but not on any forums.

My first experience with forums was when I was 14 I think. Never had a lot of drama on that one but when it got shut down and I had to move on I started getting involved in some (Admittedly I've been the starter of some of it in the past). This is the first forum I've been active on in a while so I've tried my best to avoid it.

#110 Posted by DarthOrange (3864 posts) -

Wouldn't call it drama but I have been banned 3 times and given more warnings then I care to remember.

Some serious (internet) fights with a bunch of Israel apologists, which was a bit much for a forum about high school exams. I sorta regretted it looking back cause I had some really shitty arguments and could have fared so much better if it were going on now

#112 Posted by habster3 (3595 posts) -

Yes, I remember the organicalistic_/AlwaysAngry drama vividly

#113 Posted by Harkat (1102 posts) -

I was in this one about sexism the other day

Yes, if you grew up with the Internet, I believe you would have. Many times.

#115 Posted by Petiew (1351 posts) -

I don't think I've ever been to a forum where there isn't some kind of circlejerk going on. I had some disagreement with a mod when I was 12 or aroundabout, I just ignore the stuff now.

When you've been on the internet for over a decade, you'd be lying if you said no.

That is true. Well I was in EPIC drama, as far as internet goes, in the forums of DEFAULT, an alliance on Dark Throne. From paladin of the alliance to conspiring to destroy it, undermining it from within in a war that occured between DEFAULT, which was the biggest alliance of the game, an several smaller alliances. One of the ways I used to undermine it was flamming in the forums, in a time where drama was present everyday there. After the war I was eventually banned. Good times! ahah

#117 Posted by RioStarwind (547 posts) -

Since I read the forums more than posting I've never got into any forum drama.

For as many users as we have here, it's nice to have pretty minimal forum bullshit.

I used to be in a clan on Ghost Recon (actually won a pretty big league, got free copies of the crappy Ghost Recon 2), I must have been around 13 years old and I insulted some idiots on a forum and they threatened to track me down and break my legs, started harassing the mods for my IP address.

They were all 30+ years old. Lol.

I can't wait until I am 30 and can start breaking 13 year old kids legs over a post they make on a video game thread.

By that time you can probably click a .exe with your mouse and have the kids PC break the kids legs for you

No. Thank god. It takes a lot of work, sometimes.

#122 Posted by Petiew (1351 posts) -
@Apparatus_Unearth: Yeah, I think most users are maybe a bit older than on the average video game forum so its kept to a minimum.

I've started two wars with ComicVine and Giant Bomb. One resulting in Tony following me for calling out Sara.

Drama? Not really. Back in the day I used to get in useless arguments with people on the internet. Not so much now. When someone swears at me or whatever I just laugh and continue on with my day. Or say my piece and bow out. Because in the end, no one really cares.

i was on some forums years ago when i was younger, pissed off some guy, i didnt even say anything bad. he pulled the whole internet detective thing and attempted to ruin my life, the relationship i was in, tried to get me fired, ect. it was nuts. now im extremely careful what info i put online. my facebook page that i only have because my friend nagged me to make one, is completely blank. im not filling that shit out.

What?! What are you even talking about?! I dispute your assertion that climate has literally anything at all to do with time, or when one arrives at arguments on the Internet. Also, how dare you presume to know when anyone here goes to bed? For starters, I'm not in bed right now.

I managed to get myself banned from Kotaku like 4 yearish ago I think. In retrospect I'm totally fine with that XD

#132 Posted by RPGee (759 posts) -

Have I been? I can't particularly remember, but probably. I've certainly acted like a dick before, and regretted it.

In fact, I did indeed have a minor one. I argued with a guy who claimed Katawa Shoujo was the worst game of the year, based off the first 30 mins. It didn't last long, but I can recall seething anger at such shallow opinions.

Apart from that, my forum life is happily beef-free.

#133 Posted by onimonkii (2446 posts) -

i was involved in forum drama at a forum i never even posted in. i had been posting videos of the champions online beta to youtube, so the people on the beta forums decided it would be a good idea to post my personal information in threads as some kind of witch hunt, getting them locked/deleted by mods.

after that their community manager requested i take the videos down, so i did.

Yes, on the forum for a really bad game I played some years ago. I pointed out that the economic model was stupid because it made sure that people who had previously won tournaments had a higher chance of winning tournaments again which could potentially snowball into a situation where only tournament veterans had a chance at winning. I was banned, and the upgrade is still specific to people who win tournaments.

Edit: Also on metal-archives, I wasn't banned but I got into a pretty huge argument over the exclusion of Iwrestledabearonce. My opinion on their music doesn't matter to the discussion, but they're not listed on the site basically because the admins hate the band. I think that sort of bias is bad for a site that's trying to be a wiki for metal.

We need some drama here. We need a big event that people argue over for days. Those are always fun.

#136 Posted by Claude (16254 posts) -

Hell yeah! When Giant Bomb was a blog, I got wrapped up in the Mario Kart Wii review drama. It was glorious as the word fallacy was used. I grew, but a lot of growing continued. Three fucking stars!

#138 Posted by Brodehouse (9975 posts) -

Mostly the feminist/equality debates.

Ocassionally I will get into some 1v1 brouhaha and get worked up to the point where I throw my hands up and call someone an asshole. In two cases, they apologized or cleaned up their tone to the point that I had to respect them and apologize myself. Which is something I would not have done as an aggro little teenage fuck a decade ago.

first off, your ingenious username sent me into fits of laughter which are now present in the form of "tears", due to my deficient creativity and abundance of exam laden memory. and secondly i was referring to the regional aspect of "clime", and as far as my 'filled-to-the-brim' brain goes, regions impact time, or so i have been lead to believe.

look, i'll level with ya, i just blurt nonsensical things outwards in a recurring vowel sound, and people make sense of it all. or don't. but that's never the case, because of the (fucking) "climate". hah hah ~lame ass wink face~.

@MB: Did he follow through with it? Are you a ghost now?

I post on a small forum that over the years has been home to some questionable characters. They all inevitably get banned, but some of the internet drama they can spark is always a little depressing. It's the internet, guys, chill.
