How many things like this have you guys catched? I've really started to notice a ton modern day rappers starting to rap about games now (which is pretty sick). I mean, it's not songs about games, but it's just those subtle lines that are just plain nasty if you can catch the reference.

*THIS IS NOT A SPAM POST, THIS IS LEGITIMATE, I AM USING MY SONG AS AN EXAMPLE*
Listen to about 1/3 in and see if you can spot the gaming reference. I really started this topic to see if anyone thinks stuff like that is really cool or not, because tons of my crap has references to games that I love, but thrown in in a cool way :) I personally think gaming as a lifestyle is pretty badass when music is made about it.

Buckner and Garcia.

Also, that "Fuck You" song has some line about Atari or something.

'I guess she's an X-Box, and I'm Atari. But the way she play her game ain't fair', or something like that.

Also, Kaiser Chiefs - Oh My God; 'Coming back stronger than a powered up pac-man'

Old-ish: House of Pain - "Jump Around"

I'm the cream of the crop, I rise to the top
I never eat a pig cause a pig is a cop
Or better yet a terminator
Like Arnold Schwarzenegger
Try'n to play me out like as if my name was Sega

Also, I seem to remember Joe C having a line in one of Kid Rock's songs about having more game than Coleco.

This is my bro J-A to the S-O-N yo,

the best at Mike Tysons Punch Out on Nintendo.

From Glass Joe to Macho Man, yo he fucks shit up,

then Tyson goes down with a star upper-cut.

And hes also pretty good at Super Mario 3,

but he doesnt use the flutes cause he doesnt like cheats.

Like the Contra code that he really doesnt like,

Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right,

then B, A, B, A, Select, Start you got 30 lives.

He says that shits for pussies who dont know how to fight.

Let me give you an example. I've been a fan of this rapper named "XV" for a little while, and then I saw him come out with a song titled "Final Fantasy XV", saying he was the future as in talking how final fantasy 15 has yet to come out yet. Stuff like that is just pretty damn sick. Seeing dudes who you would never thought were gamers drop game references that really only people who knew about games would catch.

Still remains did a whole song about FFVII. There's that rapper that raps about the same thing.

Also I am surprised no-one has mentioned Horse the Band. Kind of THE gaming reference band, and they 'invented' nintendocore (horrible name)

Lots of stuff that Jeff does has lots of references, especially the old Headboard stuff.

Well, I know B.o.B.'s "Nothin' On You" has a reference to N64 consoles locking up, and Jay-Z's first verse in Kanye West's "Never Let Me Down" at least name-drops Pole Position, and I wouldn't be surprised if it were a reference.

#13 Posted by OldGuy (1491 posts) -

There's this... written around the same time as Pac-Man Fever (as it was intended to go on his first album in 83, but he couldn't get pemission)... I haven't found a date it was first preformed or recorded so can't say if it preceded or followed the GB favorite:

Redman calls out the PS2 in "Lets get Dirty" back when that was new.

There's a band here in Canada who have a ton of songs with game references called "Love you to Death" (formerly "The Petit Project")

#16 Edited by TommyK (46 posts) -

Redman also references fatalities and babalities on one of the Muddy Waters tracks, forgot which one though, also OP i mean this in a nice way and i'm sure you do it just for fun but spare us your music please :p

First I heard was the infamous "Super Nintendo Sega Genesis" line in Notorious B.I.G.'s song Juicy.

This song is fantastic, as is the artist. It uses a sample of Link! You're welcome.

@MrMC: I'm pretty sure in ghostface's song Assassination day someone says galaga, although I am not sure if that is in reference to the game.

I think Domo Genesis (from Odd Future) says something like "I'm a super Sega Genesis" in a song.  Also there is a kind of shitty metal band from Texas that has a song all about Sithis from The Elder Scrolls.

Also Last Chance to Reason.  I think their Level 2 album actually comes with a Contra-like game if you buy the CD.

#23 Posted by Everyones_A_Critic (6284 posts) -

Chris Webby references a lot of videogames in some of his songs, they're pretty obvious though.

Porcupine Tree briefly mention the Xbox in Fear of a Blank Planet. All I got off the top of my head.

Who gives a f-ck? we never do listen

Wishing someone would break my legs
A burden too heavy to bare
I've tasted the lips of the Ancients
and witnessed the fall of hope.
Hope.

Like saviors to the planet
we have risen
taking out anyone in our path
Infiltrate the heart of the enemy
as they suck the stream of life
From the decapitation of Jenova
to the drowning of Aeris
Don't come even a little bit closer
or I'll show you what this ultimate weapon
Is capable of.

Infecting, Infecting our soldiers
Petty experiments solely to find
the strongest breed of chaos
to further corrupt our world.
Failed.

From the decapitation of Jenova
to the drowning of Aeris
Don't come even a little bit closer
or I'll show you what this ultimate weapon
is capable of.

Wishing someone would break my legs
A burden too heavy to bare
I've tasted the lips of the Ancients
and witnessed the fall of hope.
Hope.

Fast forward to the 2:50 mark on this video. It's the only legit version I found on Youtube.

For those not listening to the track. Wiz Khalifa used Schalas Theme from Chrono Trigger as the beats for his song "Never Been."  The lyrics have nothing to do with the game, but whoever makes Wiz Khalifa's beats probably played a lot of SNES back in the day.

Edit to try and not get the thread locked for youtube spam:   I'm not a big hip-hop fan, but when I heard this song it really took me back to my childhood.  Nostalgia is a bitch but it can certainly make an okay song enjoyable if used correctly.  Best of all, the song actually sounds decent, not just like song random beat mashed together with lyrics.

Franz Ferdinand's "Take Me Out"

it's about online FPS gaming, specifically Counter Strike.

So if you're lonely, you know I'm here waiting for you

I'm just a cross-hair, I'm just a shot away from you

And if you leave here, you leave me broken shattered I lie

I'm just a cross-hair, I'm just a shot then we can die

I know I won?t be leaving here with you

I say, "Don't you know?"

You say, "You don't know"

I say, "Take me out"

I say, "You don't show"

Don't move time is slow

I say, "Take me out"

Well I say, "You don't know"

You say, "You don't go"

I say, "Take me out"

If I move this could die

And eyes move this could die

I want you to, to take me out

I know I won't be leaving here

(With you)

I know I won't be leaving here

I know I won't be leaving here

(With you)

I know I won't be leaving here with you

Well I say, "Don't you know?"

You say, "You don't know"

I say, "Take me out"

If I wane this could die

I wait this could die

I want you to take me out

If I move this could die

Eyes move this can die

Come on, take me out

I know I won't be leaving here

(With you)

I know I won't be leaving here

(With you)

I know I won't be leaving here

(With you)

I know I won't be leaving here with you

@SeriouslyNow: It's about Archduke Franz Ferdinand getting shot. Nothing to do with video games apart from the fact that some terms appear in FPS's.

My favorite is the line in Cee Lo Green's song Fuck You "I guess he's an Xbox and I'm more Atari, but the way you play your game ain't fair. "
