I need a good book that is gonna make me think...
OK, I havent read a book in awhile so Ive been a little loss on whats out there. I like storys that are total bs but has a very intriguing story like Da Vinci Code...just something that will really grab ya. Any ideas?
Sophies World is amazing, I read it for a philosphy class I was taking. It's the history of philosophy done up in an alice in wonderland type tale. I can honestly say reading that book in my youth changed the way I think about the world.

Neuromancer or maybe Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick. I dunno, it depends on how meta you wanna go with this thinking thing.
Has anyone else read it? I'm curious.
I'm reading H.P Lovecraft's Necronomicon (short story collection) and Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy at the moment. Can only recommend both of them.
I read it along time ago, can barely remember it now. I think it use to be required reading in High Schools. Pretty sad story though loved how it was like reading a journal.
**edit**
Just remembered the old Simpson episode based on the book, Homer becomes smart after putting the crayon in his ear. Him and Lisa bond but he realizes he was happier being simple and sacrifices the relationship with his daughter. Good stuff, miss when the Simpsons use to good.
@zoskia: Anything Lovecraft I find is above any of the contemporary horror novelists.
@quantumshift5:
I thoroughly recommend 1984, Fahrenheit 541, Neuromancer as well
An anthology of Philip K. Dick or H.P. Lovecraft
Do Androids dream of electric sheep? as was already said or hell 2001 a space odyssey
Neuromancer
I say Game of thrones if you want some fantasy.
Since you're here on Giant Bomb, I'm assuming you have at least some appreciation of the vidya games. Masters of Doom is an incredible look at Johns Romero and Carmack and how they founded id Software and and follows their story from before Commander Keen all the way to Daikatana. It's really awesome, and, as someone who was born in 1991 but grew up playing Doom quite a bit, it was a really interesting and entertaining read.
I wonder if anyone actually reads the post content, sometimes.
People are suggesting novels with pretty lofty themes, or even accepted classics, while the OP specifically stated he likes a shit story ala The Da Vinci Code.
Labyrinthe by Kate Mosse is supposedly very good. It's basically about the quest for the Holy Grail.
Anything by Michael Crichton (Andromeda Strain, Sphere, Jurassic Park, ect.). Most of his stuff has a similar flow to The Da Vinci Code.
" or the Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. "Agreed. But I think my favorite Paulo Coelho book would be the Zahir. Much better story in my opinion, and lots to think about
" Confederacy of Dunces "I read that book two years ago and I still haven't made up my mind on it. Ignatius is such a fantastically disgusting person.
" @DelroyLindo said:Yeah, he is a complete asshat, but the book is hilarious and I get a kick out of the eloquent way he insults everybody" Confederacy of Dunces "I read that book two years ago and I still haven't made up my mind on it. Ignatius is such a fantastically disgusting person. "
If it doesn't have to be fiction you should pick up some Malmcolm Gladwell. My favourite is Blink but they´re all good thoughts on the human mind and society. He sparked a small revolution in my head :)
No, it's not about Dragons. It's about life forms on a neutron star (called Dragons Egg because in the night sky it looks like it's coming from the constellation Draco) that live thousands of times faster than we do. Basically, by the time we say one sentence, a generation of Cheela have passed.
It's really thought-provoking with lots of real science to wrap your head around.
Apart from the NKJV Bible, I recommend "The Third Man", a quick read about post-WW2 spy intrigue in Vienna. It's on Amazon.
Any Stephen King book, i will make you think on why you want to read... because reading is sooooo linear.
