The Dark Knight. 5/5, 10/10, 19.5/19.5. Oldman's Gordon, Eckhart's Dent and Ledger's Joker hold up so well, and there's a cleverness to the plotting, and the motivations of the characters, that's sorely lacking from recent superhero movies.

Also, that Scarecrow guest appearance.

Also, that fultoning.

Also, that awesome soundtrack.

Also, that heist opening.

Probably skewed by the fact that i've read the manga and watched the show but they took a LOT of creative license, and some of the effects are real bad.

Another day, another Coen Brothers movie. This time, my favourite Coen brothers movie; in fact, my all-time favourite movie. At least for me, Burn After Reading is almost perfect. What a clusterfuck.

SPECTRE - 2/5

Didn't like Skyfall much, but this one is even worse. I always compare the Bond movies to Casino Royale (which is my favourite) and that movie had everything SPECTRE does not: cool 'Bond tricks', tense moments, a good story and a ruthless villain.

The opening minutes started off pretty good, but after the title sequence it went downhill fast. It's like watching a compilation of corny action movie moments. The supporting story is totally ridiculous. And ofcourse James Bond likes his women, but in this movie he comes across as a dirty old man just grabbing everything he can. Wasn't expecting much, but still disappointed.

The Visit 3/5

Really fun and enjoyable. Like most Shyamalan movies, the story suffers a bit to accommodate the twist, but I liked it just the same.

I definitely wasn't expecting it to be comedy-horror, so that threw me a bit. The laughs landed for the most part, though, and there were some genuinely creepy scenes throughout. The ending though... that's what knocks it down to a 3. Just didn't work for me at all.

It was okay. But they didn't know how to utilize the music and, in many cases, the dinosaurs themselves. It seemed like they were more pumped up about the park and the shops than the cool creatures.

The Descent- 4/5

Some really great shots, use of darkness and primary colors. First half is way scarier than the second because caves are worse than monsters. A few interesting characters among a group of red-shirts. Great music.

The Descent: Part 2- 2/5

Should not exist. Elaborates on nothing, and messes with the timeline of the first movie. Points for comical 1800's revolver-toting handlebar moustachey old-timey cop, and also making every character either unnecessary or a comic book hero/anti-hero.

The Fly (1986)- 4/5 Cronenberg monsters

Still pretty gross.

American Psycho 3/5

I think I enjoyed it. Very weird and disturbing.

I have not read the book, but this definitely feels like an awkward book-to-movie adaptation. I did not like the internal monologues that happen every now and then - parts that seem like they are taken whole-cloth from the book (like I said, I haven't read the book, so I don't know exactly, but that's certainly what it seems like). Also, some parts feel a little disjointed / not fully fleshed out.

Circle - 3/5

I wanted to see this one at SIFF this year, but the screening times didn't work out. It just got added to Netflix, and I'd be curious to see what people think of it. It's about thirty people who wake up standing in a strange room, and they quickly figure out that they've been abducted by aliens and have to vote to kill each other one by one. It's kind of like Saw meets 12 Angry Men, I guess you could say. I have some major problems with it (mainly the writing), but it's super watchable and not very long.

The Battle of Five Armies 2/10

I'd been putting this one off because I didn't care much for the first two movies. Finally watched it on Netflix. Hoo boy, is this a bad movie. I had to split it over two nights to get through it.

It's hard to know even where to start. The crap CGI. The fact that most of the movie is about a battle where you don't care much for who is in it. The fact that the Hobbit is supposed to be the title character and he is barely in the movie. The cringeworthy elf-dwarf-romance - it's like Padme-Anakin level bad. The cut to a bunch of sad looking peasants in front of a green screen every time the movie tried to convey tragedy. That the arkenstone is all-important one minute, then is forgotten when the battle starts and it is never brought up again. The fact that two characters travel to God knows where to watch a bunch of bats fly out of a cave. The fact that one character is supposed to be overcome with greed and suspicion and then suddenly shakes it off for no reason. The prequelitis where we know who is going to survive so putting them in danger adds no tension at all. The battlemoose. I could go on.

Peter Jackson should go back to making Bad Taste 2 with a camcorder or something. It's clear that Middle-Earth has nearly spent him.

@rasmoss: I recommend this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQkygZdZ_Vk) from the Hobbit movie set, which basically explains why the movie sucked. I would've much preferred to see Del Toro's take on the book.

Spectre - like, 4/10? From the trailer the movie seemed like ,,it's all been leading up to this'', they namedrop previous villains, but... it feels strangely empty. The opening scene was my favorite one, but after that I didn't really feel the tension or care too much about what was happening on the screen. There are a few scenes that started to feel a bit like a parody. I still feel positively about Daniel Craig's performance (I liked Casino Royale and Skyfall). However, if there's a chance for a new actor to play Bond, I think this would be a good moment to switch it up.

Io Island

A Korean supernatural thriller from the director of The Housemaid about disappearances and an island of women, and a police investigation and just general oddness. It reminded me a bit of Peter Weir's earlier stuff, but it never got under my skin, or provided someone I could really latch onto and identify with. The scope photography and increasingly lurid colors are impressive, but it never really took hold of me.

I did all six Star Wars films on sunday. here we go.

A Phantom Menace:3/5

Like honestly? this movie works super well as a so-bad-its-good movie. The humor is super awkward and the child acting is satisfyingly crappy, which are both positives for a fun bad movie. This film also has a lot of new star wars jargon that just completely falls flat, but often in a pretty funny way. midichlorians are the famous one, but im a particular fan of the "chance cube", which is just a colored die. overall, this one is super watchable with friends. it has less of the CG hallway walking melodrama that the later two got bogged down in, and the pod race is still pretty fun.

Attack of the Clones: 1/5

This is the worst one, and its not even close. Everyone cites Jar-Jar as the worst thing about the prequels, but I can say with confidence that Hayden Christensen is worse. He just bumbles through his dialogue with little charisma and even less likability. His performance really makes you wonder why Obi-Wan considers him such a great friend when all he does is disobey orders, and get mad all the time. Natalie Portman is also very bad movie, so it makes a little more sense that her character falls in love with Anakin, since she also just sucks the life out of every scene she's in. Even with all that, I don't think theres any way she shouldve been so supportive when her boyfriend admits to just committing a gruesome spree killing of some Tusken Raiders. Is Padme really dumb, or really racist? Because it's one of the two. This is the movie which has the scene where Boba Fett hires an assassin, who sends a droid to assassinate the Padme, and that droid covertly cuts a hole in the glass of the room she's staying in, and instead of just shooting her with a gun, it poops some centipedes in there to poison her i guess? thats very stupid. also, Obi-Wan goes to a 50's diner in this movie to ask a short order cook about some high tech dart he found. this scene only exists because George Lucas wanted to see what it would be like if there was a 50's diner in Star Wars. It sucks, George. This whole thing sucks.

Revenge of the Sith: 2/5

This is the movie where I really felt bad for Ewan McGregor. In better movies, he could've made young Obi-Wan a really great character, but he is given so little to really work with in these. This one is just boring. It suffers the most from prequelitis, where nothing in the movie has any tension because you already know what has to happen in the last ten minutes. I think the prequel-style lightsaber fights are extremely boring to watch because everyone fights in the exact same style, making everything feel more like a Wushu demonstration than a fight so for me ending the trilogy with a super long one of those was really anti-climactic.

A New Hope: 5/5

This movie is kinda perfect. It works exceptionally well as a standalone movie, but its also so rich in suggestion and worldbuilding that you can really see why it captured the worlds imagination and launched the biggest entertainment franchise ever. This movie is just overflowing with great performances and characters. It had been so long since I last saw this, so a lot of the incidental dialogue came as almost a suprise to me. Han Solo is such an icon that what he represents (the bastard with a heart of gold, aloof cool guy, etc etc) kind of overshadows just how great Harrison Ford is in this movie. He throws himself completely into every scene. I can't think of any part of this one that dragged or anything. just great. That being said, most of the CG added in the Special Edition still sucks. To me, the huge majority of it feels like when your watching a good movie on like TBS or something and randomly Bazinga from the Big Bang Theory walks across your screen and like falls over or whatever to tell you whats coming up next. there's literally a part (i think it was in this one, maybe not) where Lucas dropped a CGI alien farting in another alien's face. Like, was that really necessary? how much money and time did that take to make George? All that garbage doesnt manage to really diminish the film thankfully, but i will still be glad when and if the unaltered versions make it out on blu-ray.

The Empire Strikes Back: 5/5

What is there to say? It's Empire. The Dark Middle Chapter. Where it all goes wrong. The consensus seems to be that this is the best one, but for me it's tied with the first one. both are excellent. This has Hoth, which is the only great cinematic land battle between the rebels and the empire, i think. I dont really count the battle on the forest moon of Endor, because that was mostly Ewoks v Empire. Yoda is so full of life in this movie. He has an actual personality, as opposed to in the prequels where him and mace windu are completely interchangable at all times. Its also great to see in this movie what Jedi training kind of looks like with luke and yoda, because in the prequels we go from baby Anakin right up to teen Anakin who can already basically do everything Obi-Wan can do. I loved the mayhem at Cloud City, the reveal of Vader sitting at a dinner table was pretty fun, the Han/Leia moment as Han is getting frozen is one of the all time great moments. The saber fight between Luke and Vader is a masterpiece. Its visually iconic and manages to tell something about the characters with the choreography. Front to back this is just as good as the first.

Return of the Jedi: 3/5

This one starts super strong and then just kind of falls apart. I absolutely love the Jabba's palace sequence, and the fight on the barge. Seeing all the different weird aliens is one of the best parts of Star Wars. It was radical to see full blown Jedi Luke do his thing, but after that, it just sort of slows way down. Yoda's death scene takes forever. Threepio talks to the Ewoks for what feels like a hundred years, and generally not that much happens. the final lightsaber battle is cool, and seeing Vader redeemed is still a great moment. i dunno. maybe its because i was so close to finishing a 13 hour movie marathon, but by the end i was just happy it was over.

Just watched "The DUFF" on DVD. It was a sweet movie, but much like all Hollywood movies the star is beautiful. They didn't even try to hid the fact that Mae Whitman is stunning.

Rate: 3/5 Too warm and cozy to have much heft. Anyone suffering from DUFF-ism would find little in common with Mae who plays the role as an attractive, confident enough, smart-smartass. She doesn't even win the boy, she had him the whole time.

The dinos fought each other and ate people, that was fun. Also B.D. Wong was there! But that was probably one of the worst scripts I've ever seen. It was one GIGANTIC cliche, whoever edited the trailer should win some sort of award for making that pile look actually kind of cool. They could have gone tense and scary like the trailer lied about and it may have been a great movie, but this was just fucking total garbage. And although the CG dinos were kind of cool, they WILL become dated fast. Uhg. UHHHHHHHHHHHG.

The Cabin in The Woods.

I have to say though, this movie was way better than I'd expected it to be. It plays with the usual tropes of horror movies in ways that are just very entertaining. The only thing that I didn't like was the ending but maybe that was because I expected something more clever, especially when you have this ridiculous build-up right before ending. Other than that, it was a fantastic movie, highly recommended to anyone who wants something different in horror movies.

The fact that this movie made so much money and was popular is the biggest film mystery to me in this past year. There were cool scenes scattered in but the amount of braindead moments sank it for me.

The Martian. 4/5. Solid movie. I think alot of people had the totall wrong expectations going into it. Its plays like a non-fictional movie but about a fictional event. I think people expected it to be crazier but really its meant to seem like that stuff could actually happen.

H.R Gigers World. what a guy, he was incredible, as an artist, and a person. I felt incredibly sad as I watched it, he was so frail at the end. To see him paint, go to his childhood home. He's signing books of his art and he says "that's all that matters." Did he feel that people only cared about his signature? They didn't respect the art?

The Front Page

The 1931 original. In some ways a standard madcap comedy for its time; not always that funny, takes a little while to get going, based on a play---hampering its scope. But dang, the performances are all really strong and Milestone's direction is surprisingly sophisticated. Yeah, sometimes he's dollying all over just to do it, but the camera movement here is super impressive for the time it was made. By all means Howard Hawks' rendition of the same story is a good deal stronger, but this is actually a pretty good flick!

Tai Chi Master (AKA Twin Warriors)

Pretty standard plot. Two shaolin monks, who grew up together, end up leaving their temple, and one seeks power and money, joining the corrupt leader of the province, and the other joins a rebellion against said leader.

Early 90's Jet Li. Really enjoyable, good comedy (maybe hurt a bit because the subtitles were not good, at all), really good fights (unless you don't like the more fantastical kinds of martial arts movies). It's just really fun. I hadn't seen it in like 10 years, but I've got the urge to watch a bunch of 20-30 year old martial arts movies, mostly Jackie Chan and Jet Li.

Up next, probably Fong Sai-yuk (AKA The Legend), also with Jet Li.

Also holy shit Jet Li is 52 years old.
