During Ronald Reagan's presidency social security had a surplus. The Baby Boomers were set for retirement and it looked like finally Americans wouldn't have their hard earned pay checks ridiculously taxed every two weeks by social security. What happen was good old Ronald went and took the money from the surplus and spent it on missiles and other weapons so we could "win the cold war".... actually I'm going to paraphrase, so his rich friends that sold weapons could profit off war spending. The reason I sarcastically said that the weapons were bought to win the cold war is because many members of his cabinet were telling him that Russia was bankrupt and there economy was about to collapse. So because Reagan stole the social security money 8% of my pay check goes to social security and I already don't make a lot because I'm a teenager that works part time at a fast food chain. Thanks a lot Ronald Reagan!
Even if that surplus wasn't spent on defence, you'd still end up losing more than you get from social security. Social security is a government-sponsored pyrmaid scheme, that no one seems to want to prosecute.

You obviously didn't read my post. People in his cabinet were telling him that the Russian economy was about the collapse. The war was pretty much over already and there was no reason to keep buying weapons.

I've said it plenty of times, Reagonomics was complete bullshit. Deficit spending and then trying to grow yourself out of the debt you've created is madness, even for a fiat based economy. Reagonomics was always manipulation of the supply side economy, namely the money supply. It was always a short term answer no more than that. Unfortunately every president of the US since has carried on where Reagan left, and like idiots they have it drummed into their skulls that deficit spending is OK, quite simply because they believe the US as a whole is just "TOO BIG TO FAIL". Unfortunately one day someone was gonna get left with a bill they couldn't pay off, and the whole nation was gonna suffer as a result. Borrowing money does not make you richer. It makes you poorer in the long run.
Social Security had been abused the year it began, and it was doomed to fail on its inception. FDR created the system in which to garnish your wages, and the system which is compulsory, not voluntary, will continue to run uncontested due to the fact that anyone who seriously opposes such a system will be committing political suicide.
