Hey i made it into a poll. Now show your love and devotion to a genre and this time you must choose one! No "I like both BS".

I like hard SF and speculative fiction, don't care for space operas. I also like court intrigue, urban fantasy and historical fantasy but not quest fantasy or epic fantasy.
And if you know what all that means without using google, god help you.

Maybe I've been playing way too much StarCraft II lately, but I went with Sci-fi.

I feel like almost every fantasy story is the same, or they are limited in scope. Sci-fi has done a great job with presenting modern fears and putting a prospective future look on them. But thankfully, it does more than show us dystopian futures.

To make a broad, sweeping generalization, I find more male "nerds" are into sci-fi, and more female "nerds" are into fantasy. You can tell me I'm wrong, this is just what I've noticed amoung my friends.

Sci-fi.

There's a bit more leeway and ideas you can toss around in sci-fi. But in fantasy, you pretty much always have your standard magic tossed in somewhere, as long as with the familiar races and faces of species (elves, dwarves, etc.)

I have great memories from WoW of peacefully stabbing rabbits in a nice forest outside a castle.  That sort of thing is always more appealing to me than the usual darkly lit metallic sci-fi stuff.

It's very rare that I find something in the Sci-fi genre interesting. Fantasy for sure.

i like the Fantasy setting more than Sci-Fi. The mythical creatures are more appealing and having to combat them with swords, shooting arrows or spells is more exciting for me.

I was going to say they're pretty much equal in my eyes, but then I realized much of the science fiction I like has a healthy dose of fantasy in it.

So fantasy.

I'm getting tired of all the sci-fi in games.  I could use more lighthearted fantasy, I don't want any of that emo/hardcore 'mature' fantasy BS, please.

Maybe I just need more variety in my game sci-fi themes.  There's too many damn space marines.  Give me stuff like Machinarium or Blade Runner.  Cyberpunk would be great.  I'd probably want that more than anything.

The line has always been pretty arbitrary. Nothing in scifi is actually possible, wouldn't that essentially make it no different than magic?

@ryanwho: I like to think of it this way: if you can take a fantastical element from a science-fiction universe, put it in a fantasy world, and still have that world feel 100% fantasy, then that fantastical element is fantasy.

I would choose Sci-fi, mainly because it's a, ehhhmm 'fantasy' that seems more plausible. Fantasy on the other hand, feels like it's more in the past and couldn't ever happen.

Kinda hard to explain, but you get the idea.

There's Sci-FI. Then there's Fantasy.

And then there's Lord of the Rings.

I'm sure you know where I'm heading with this.

I like both, but I tend to prefer Sci-Fi. I get in moods for one over the other from time to time, but I will always have a tad more love of space ships and exploring the unknown over Fantasy. I guess that's why I tend to like Warhammer 40k and Star Wars so much. They are Sci-Fi Fantasy combined.

My answer in a poem:

I would rather stab myself in the eyes with forks
than play a game that features Orcs.

Hope you got it after the first line.  I genuinely do have that.  Dragunz and Orkz = failzium nitraytes!!!

Sadly, most sci-fi is really just space fantasy. I wish there was more hard science fiction.

Absolutely not true because Mass Effect probably has one of the best sci fi fictions ever created, rivalling the likes of Star Trek.

You know when someone says "Watch this show, you'lll love it... blehhh bleehhhh blehhhh" and you watch it and it's not as good as they've been bleating about.  Basically that.  It's a bit stale, very straight and humourless.  The "Desperate Housewives" universe is more interesting even though it's broken and I don't know who for.  I'd have to say don't even respond to me just because you're wasting your time.  I'm a Mass Effect athiest in a land of the devout.  I know my meek place.

I've always been more into fantasy.  At least as far as literature goes.

That's probably why I love Star Wars so much.  It's basically a fantasy story told in space.

I generally prefer sci-fi to fantasy, but I've come to appreciate both and I watch and read less science fiction than I used to.  Maybe I'll find some hard sci-fi I can read again, but studying real space ships makes too many of the major flaws in normal science fiction stand out to me.
