The phrase "Sell Out" has been perverted into meaning anyone who makes money who did not previously make money. This is an inaccurate redefinition, so be careful when asking about Sell Outs.

Listen to the song Hooker With a Penis by Tool, that will tell you everything you need to know about sell outs. Everyone related to showbiz is a sellout. It's the name of the game.

I'd say sellout means artists who became famous for doing what they normally do, but then chasing the dollar and diluting their product, whatever that may be.

And there seem to be a lot of those.

Why would you ever do a paper on "Sell outs" thats a horrible subject, like trying to prove intent in a court room.

"selling out" is all about intentions, and who are we to say what the intentions of any artist are when they do their art?

@Torrim:   You could say that, but then you get into the nebulous grey area of if the band or artist decided to change styles on their own accord.

The phrase "sell-out" is so horrible, a phrase used by indie holier-than-thous who want to feel cooler than all the other kids because a band decided they need some cash. GUESS WHAT THIS IS AMERICA THE LAND WHERE MONEY RULES.  Just because an artist desires cash dosent mean the "Horrible horrible record companies perverted the music and MADE them change".

The only musicians who don't have to sell out are the one's who die young.

Their relatives then do it for them.

ITT: People complaining about the bands they like becoming popular.

Nothing comes to mind right now. I'd stay away from musicians as so much of that is really driven by the desire to do new things and I think rarely it's as one sided as doing it for the money.

Go for more blatant things like commercial backing and advertising.

I just dont understand why people look apon it with such distain. Then some people act like it happens suddenly without the band knowing, like green day just woke  up one morning and suddenly they were recording "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" nope they decided to take their band that direction.

Why should people talk down about a band who decides they want money. I mean, no one called the Beatles sell-outs when they started making Psychedelic Albums, and people should've. Just remember, people called Bob Dylan a "pop-band sell out" when he went electric, how fucked is that?

You'd probably be best to look into the realm of movies, espically horror movies.

Hey thanks for the replies guys,

I have decided to stick to movies, or maybe poeple that do alot of adverts, create alot of merchandise around the product.

I am going to do the star wars prequels, they seem good.

I wont do music, as thats to opinionated, and i wont do games as i dont want to get into that being a valid form of literature or whatever

If you guys have some suggestions that abides by the above, that would be great :)

Metallica once said they would never make a music video, And Justice for all was released and that's when the first music video came and the decline of Metallica started, think what you want, they sold out and made way more cash then they were making, I still don't know how you tards think they just changed there sound and make it seem like they are still good, Load, Reload, St.Anger and Death Magnetic all blew ass and were all a different sound, you would think they would stick to what they were good at with the first 4 albums but they decided to change there sound for the worst and making Country Metal with Load and Reload and then make Garbage Can Metal with St.Anger and then make "Were kickin it old school thrash metal.......jk " Metal with Death Magnetic

Essentially what you're asking for is for an artist to make exactly the same song for thirty years, and that's just not going to happen. It doesn't happen with artists (painters), writers, directors, and it shouldn't be expected of musical artists either. If that's what you want, you're just being hella closed minded. Metallica have the right to make whatever music they want. If they want to make pop, they can. Nobody's going to stop them, let alone some idiots who call themselves "fans". If you want to listen to Master of Puppets-style Metallica, just listen to that goddamn album over and over again. Nobody asked you to listen to the rest of their work.

Personally, I dislike their first three albums and I like the rest of their work. Load/Reload is probably my favorite work of theirs because I like its slow, hard, raw style. In the real world we lend artists the right to do whatever the want, because we don't have control over them - only they do. You can't box Metallica, just as you can't box Mark Rothko, Wassily Kandinsky, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Bryan Adams, or whoever - take your pick.

I remember a group called dasboard confessional was playing where I worked, and they were doing some kind of advertising for a car company I believe, outside.

The Who Sell out was a funny album. As for later on though?...I donno. Some mess-ups it seems.

Lucas was never not about the money. He's as passionate as he ever was, he's just more comfortable being an auteur now. He's like the opposite of a sell out, he was far better when he gave a damn about public perception. Now he does whatever bullshit he wants and people pay for it. basically his fans, by enabling the shitty stuff, are the sell outs.
