So it's 3:18 as of starting to write this post. I need to force myself to go to sleep so I can actually function in the morning. Sometimes my sleep patterns are erratic, and sometimes I need ambiance to actually go to sleep. Other times not. So I'm about to curl up with some Bob Ross DVD's and let that bushy-fro'ed paragon lull me away to dreamland.

What do you guys usually do to put yourself to sleep?

Nightcap? Warm milk? Stuffing bacon in your pillows? Resting on the flayed skins of your enemies?

Good night, GiantBomb.

I play Word Solitaire on my iPhone. I'm generally asleep in 25-30 minutes. However, if I'm on a roll, or beat one of my previous scores, it takes longer ><.

Classical music. Mostly Beethoven stuff or anything sad or depressing. Makes me sleep like a baby.

Or porn before bed. That works too.

  1. Take medicine at 1 AM
  2. Scratch ass
  3. Screw around on tumblr, scratch ass (and nuts) every now and then.
  4. Finally remember to take off my shirt and pants.
  5. Turn fan on. Scratch again.
  6. More tumblring.
  7. Refresh GB and/or CV several dozen times.
  8. Scratch.
  9. Meds start to kick in.
  10. Tumblr.
  11. Start to pass out.
  12. Shut off computer and set it on nearby surface, scratch one last time.

  1. Disrobe to acceptable levels. If I wear anything more than underwear, shorts, and a beater, I am not falling asleep. No joke.
  2. Noise. I need the TV on or a podcast or something. If there's no noise, I'll literally lay there for hours lol. It's like I have to distract myself so I don't actually think about the act of sleeping.
  3. Take off my glasses. Bad things happen when I fall asleep with my glasses on.
  4. Pass out. Once I'm gone, that's it. Almost nothing is getting me up.

Get naked (I cannot get to sleep even with just boxers on).

Play the DS for a little bit.

Sleep.

i started taking Melatonin. It's produced by the body naturally to help you fall asleep, but staring at a computer monitor or a TV can keep it from kicking in so i started taking a pill a night and it helps a lot. i fall asleep easier and get a lot better sleep then i used to (also tend to wake up earlier feeling more awake).

As long as I have pitch darkness and a fan on for white noise, I'm good to go. I try to avoid playing games before bed, if anything I'll read for a half hour or so.

Within the last year or so I've gotten into listening to music or the Bombcast to fall asleep, but other than that, nothing. If I'm really tired I don't even need that.

I've been taking melatonin too, and yeah it's made a remarkable difference. As for the monitor thing, there's something that can help there too. The reason that late night computer / TV can impact your sleep is that the color blue stimulates your thalamus, causing your body to think that it's day time and not time to sleep. There's a piece of software out there (name escapes me, let me know if you're interested and I'll dig it up) that will lower the blue balance on your monitor around sunset, allowing your thalamus to figure out that it is indeed night, and time to sleep. It gives things a 'rosy' look, and between that and the melatonin, I'm getting MUCH better sleep than I used to.

Installed it a month ago, it was a tad annoying at first but by now I'm used to it and don't actively recognize it (though I also lowered the amount of impact). Not sure if it helps me sleeping better but it seems neat.

Fan on, lights out, sleep.

I've never really had difficulty falling asleep provided I didn't drink a ton of caffeine before bed. And even then, it's a 50/50 chance I'll just pass out anyway.

@NaDannMaGoGo: @MyNiceIceLife

f.lux is great. I have it installed at home and on my work computer with the color modifier at full. It takes surprisingly little time to get used to the change in color temperature and it drastically reduces eye-strain from staring at my monitor for 8+ hours.

Yup, that's it! All I can say is between that and the melatonin, something is doing the trick.

Also, it's cool watching how it kicks in a minute earlier every day as the days get shorter.

I just turn the computer off, go to the bathroom, then go to bed. Sometimes I read or play a game before going to bed, but most of the time I just turn off the computer and then go to bed.

I read for at least 30 minutes or an hour every night. I've been doing it since I was five. I couldn't stop now, even if I wanted to. I also make it a point to refrain from staring at any sort of screen for at least an hour before going to bed. Other than that, my wife has in the last week or so taken to playing an app that she downloaded that plays a bunch of different ambient sounds, like wind blowing through the trees and that sort of thing. I don't really need it but I don't necessarily mind it either. It just reminds me of my cousin, who at this point can't fall asleep without listening to some sort of ambient noise.

I've gone to using a sleep mask in the last few months and I find it helps greatly. I had problems falling asleep but now I'm always asleep within a half hour of when I put the mask on. I usually have my radio on so there is noise in the background but I can't see anything, even with my eyes wide open.

My recipe for sleep:

  1. Melatonin and Zyrtec (also to help with allergies)
  2. An electric fan for breeze and background noise
  3. A game that doesn't require precision timing (I used to play a ton of Platinum Sudoku, New York Times Crossword Puzzles, and Advance Wars on the DS, but lately I've been digging the various sim games made by Kairosoft)

Take #1, turn on #2, get into bed and start playing #3 until you wake up the next morning still holding your DS/phone/PSP/whatever. That's what I do, at least.

I remember hearing something about that in the past, but never installed it (think it was from either here or Tested.com). I still won't install it on this computer, but I have been switching over to my laptop during the late night so i'll probably install it on that and give it a try.

Close my eyes and hope it works. Which is only when I'm entirely exhausted and lying comfortably. Slight discomfort will keep me awake through the worst kind of exhaustion, and not being tired enough will make me unable to sleep no matter how warm and cozy the bed is.

Yeah I don't really sleep very well....

When I had a TV in my room, I would turn on episodes of "The Joy of Painting". Which is the painting painting show hosted by Bob Ross (the happy painter).
