I hope it isn't because of his health but damn. It is going to be an end of an era.
Here is his letter.
To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:
I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.
I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.
As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.
I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.
I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.
Steve
I will not be surprised if the future of Apple is up in the air now. It always kinda seemed that he was the glue holding that company together, I guess we'll see if that's true in the coming years.
Is it true that that guy IS apple and all of its big seller products, and that without him the Apple employees and managers are total clueless headless chickens?
Truly a sad day for Apple. Let's hope the company can still put out quality products without him as CEO.
True, but the company lacks direction under Ballmer. The Kin was a failure, Windows Phone 7 is stagnant, Microsoft Surface was canned, Zune isn't all to popular, and Kinect is going nowhere.@Surkov said:
I hope Apple doesn't go the way Microsoft went when Bill Gates left the ship to Steve Ballmer.Didn't MS just announce porfits of like $6 billion for the last quarter? I'd say they're doing pretty well.
Sad, and I hope it's not because of his supposedly declining health, but I hope that he'll be able to find peace and solace with whatever the next step in his life would be.
(Sidenote- is this really news? Jobs is a figurehead of one of the biggest companies of the world, but I don't think people need to get up in arms about it. There's no scandal here or anything. Apple will still be Apple regardless, Pixar will still be Pixar, he's still got a ton of shares at Disney, business as usual come next Monday)
Ah shit, I hope it's not because of his health :(
As much as I don't like a lot of Apple's business practices, he's a ridiculously intelligent and talented man.
These are some truly fascinating times. Things are changing so dramatically, so fast. I don't know what to think.
I'm biased, but I don't think it's going to hurt the company that much. Sure the stock will drop tomorrow, it's already dropped 5% in after hours trading, but there is no way Jobs stepped down without having a comprehensive plan for the future of the company. I'm sure he has ideas already set in motion, they are sitting on the ipad 3 and iphone 5 (which I bet gets announced next week), and Cook is no slouch.

That's mostly true but, at the end of the day, his job is to make the company profitable and he's doing just that.
I, for one, think that Apple is going to do just fine without him. How much did he really do as CEO? Surely there's people in the company that are going to keep the Apple ship sailing. It's not like they're going to announce the iNewton tomorrow or anything.
Honestly I really don't like Apple and the way they do buisness but eh, can't help feel bad about Steve Jobs having cancer.

Android was pretty barebones and lacked apps for quite some time too, now it's not far from iOS in terms of apps. @Surkov said:I totally agree with you about Windows Phone 7. After reading the exhaustive Anandtech review of WIndows 7, I was considering getting a Win7 Phone for a while. I just wish Microsoft was more aggressive with it. The Nokia deal was exciting at first, but nothing has come of it yet. Hopefully we'll be hearing about some new phones in the fall.@mracoon said:Windows Phone 7 is one of the more interesting things Microsoft are doing and it's very much so in its infancy still. Leaving on an high is an understatement for both Apple and Steve Jobs. Be interesting how well Apple cope without him, know he isn't the only smart dude behind their success but he is a public face of what Apple as become... good or bad.
