I'm in the market for a camera, I used to have a pretty good digital Sony camara. But I sold it when I got my iPhone 4S thinking I'd be satisfied with that, sure it's good for most cases but there have been times when I wish I would have had a better camera for that shot. So what camera's do you have, give me some reccomendations. I'm willing to spend up to £150, doesn't have to be digital.

Update - Camara get, I got a Canon EOS 350D.

Somewhere like Camera World or Jessop's can be overpriced but their advice is free also they'll let you have a look at the cameras if you ask nicely. For deals might be worth asking on a tech blog forum, but for god's sake spell camera properly or you get nothing from those guys.

Also most big supermarkets have photography sections in them (ASDA's in particular) they usually have pretty good amateur cameras for pretty cheep.

Does anyone have a good recommendation for a quality camera at an affordable price? Are there any entry-level cameras that take a satisfactory picture without costing a fortune?

I have a Canon EOS 600D which is just beautiful. I use a 50mm prime with it and it takes great pics.

No Caption Provided

The 50mm is especially good for close up and macro stuff. (Like if you have figures or stuff that you want to take pics of.)

I use the Canon Eos 600D.

And for work stuff I use the 5D. Don't own it personally though, so the first answer is the accurate one.

You are not going to surpass the iPhone 4S's camera quality for 150E.

Probably not unless you stumble upon a huge price cut (like I did for around 170E), but one thing you can definitely get at the price is superior zoom and flash. The LED flash phones use is pretty garbage.

Look into bridge cameras maybe? That's what I have which works well for me, might get a DSLR when I move to Japan though.

I got a Canon 40D with assorted lenses (my favourite is probably the 60mm Canon) and an Olympus XZ-1 which I carry around. The DSLR I only take out for special occasions these days, can't be bothered to carry that around.

Is that a 30 Rock reference? Because if it is, it blew my mind grapes. Back on topic, I don't really have a good camera, a Canon HG20, but my brother has a Canon 5d, and let me tell you, that's one hell of a camera. Though the lenses he got are pretty cool too.

@Hizang:

How much did you pay? If you're in the £100-200 barrier I'd probably have gone for this instead (£129), that Canon is kinda outdated.

Guess it depends how important lens changing is to you.

@Sooty: It cost me £200 off of eBay, but it also came with a camera bag, spare battery, lens cap, memory card and neck strap. I probably should have looked for a lot longer, but people said its a nice beginner DSLR camera. You say it's dated, how dated is it exactly, is it bad dated or just slightly worse dated?

I also have zero knowledge about lenses, or anything really about photography, never stepped outside of auto mode on my old camera.

It came out in 2005 (I think) so the tiny low res screen and low-ish MP kind of stick out a little, not that megapixels mean everything obviously, just still. I don't think it does video either right? Not sure how it'll compare to the iPhone (if you have a 4S) though, I think it might be kind of close. Purely speculating there though. Try here, not the 350 but another Canon: http://www.digitalcamerabeginner.net/index.php/2011/10/14/iphone-4s-vs-dslr-canon-500d-t1i/

I would have started off with something cheaper and looked into getting a more modern DSLR if you really get into the whole photography thing.

Haha. For the most part that is kind of true, the differences won't be huge between it and the 350D, it wouldn't shock me if the 4S wins - in the link the 500D actually lost out to the 4S in some cases. If you had a 3GS or an iPhone 4 then the Canon would trounce it.

You do get more control with a DSLR though, but I don't think that control is worthwhile for an amateur so that's why I recommended either a point or shoot or bridge. Phone cameras aren't shabby now, the only reason I have my Nikon is because the 21x zoom is awesome, one area where phone cameras can't compete. Oh yeah! High end DSLRs are great for capturing fast movement, explains all the photographers at sporting events with their massive DSLRs.

@Sooty: This is rather upsetting news, I don't think it's going to be refundable either, well shit. After reading up about it a little more people have posted reviews from as late as June this year, they have been like.

  • It's a very good beginners choice.
  • Very affordable.
  • Lightweight.
  • Comfortable.
  • Easy to use straight out of the box.
  • Very customisable.

From the reviews back when it came out they said the quality of the picture was fantastic, the ones written this year and last year both say they are really good too. I suppose we will have to wait and see, I'm being hopeful.

There's no doubt it's a good camera and will still take a decent photo, just don't expect any stand out improvement over your 4S or you will be super disappointed. I'm not sure about the 4S but the Canon will probably have a wide angle lens so you'll fit more into a photo at least.

I'm a part time wedding photographer and I own a 5d Mark ii. I've been into photography for quite a while now so I have some good experience with a decent amount of cameras. For my assignments I've extensively used the Canon Rebel XT, XTi, XS, XSi, T1i, T2i, 40D, 50D, 60D, 7D, 5D Mark ii, Nikon D40, D80, D90, D300, D3 with various lenses and such.

I can take wonderful pictures with my 5D (I can share some if you guys want me to) but I actually don't recommend DSLRs to people. Honestly, the iPhone 4s can take pictures just as good as a Rebel XT can for most people. Unless you plan on really learning to use the camera's best abilities (learning manual exposure)  and buying some good lenses (50mm 1.8, 35mm 1.4), you won't be able to make your Rebel XT have better shots than the iPhone 4s. The iPhone is smarter and has better macro abilities than the XT. Hell the default 4s lens is better than the Rebel XT's 18-55mm lens in terms of aperture and focusing abilities.

So take home message: Unless you really plan on learning photography, your iPhone 4s has a better camera than your Rebel XT with a kit lens.

It's pretty outdated. Current beginner cameras like the T2i, T3i completely blow it off the map in terms of ISO (Camera's ability to create extra light), Color reproduction, Details (in megapixels and sharpness), and a great number of features. The rebel XT was my first camera - this was 4 years ago and even then it was a little outdated. The screen is tiny and its not beginner friendly. Unless you plan on really utilizing the manual exposure features and learning photography, I assure you that your iPhone 4s is better. Especially if you plan on just using the auto settings.

@Hizang Yep, I know it. Actually borrowed one of those and was thinking of buying one when I got a good deal on a 30D instead (which I later traded for a 40D). Never mind the mega pixel count, anything above 5 is fine. It's optics that matter more.

Canon T3i with a 50mm Prime, 85mm Prime and an old 70-210mm Zoom Lens for a Rebel 35mm film camera (quality degrades a bit due to it not being a digital lens and it can be hard to focus on the fly but it works for me).

Also any 150 dollar camera isn't going to be useful for shit. No Manual controls just pretty much a Camera phone in a shell with external memory. The 4s will prob be as good if not better. I know my S3 Camera is decent for close/mid range shots as I experienced at Warped Tour this weekend and I couldn't bring my DSLR.

@Castermhief117: @Vodun: @Sooty: Ok so it arrived early this morning despite me only ordering it yesterday, very quick. I have to go to work very soon so didn't get to play with it t much. All I can say is I am very very happy with what I got, seeing as its my first DSLR it took a while to get used to taking good ones but with just 20 minuets I managed to take some decent pictures that I don't think my iPhone could take.

I'll mess more with it when I get home, very surprised at how good it is.
