What is Reggaeton and why is there always a radio station for it

In GTA and Saints Row there has been San Juan radio and Kabron radio stations for this specific genre of music. It's beyond me why though.

I actually really liked the music but confused as to what exactly it is, are they singing in spanish or portugese or something else?

And In Saints Row there are a few bands that i have pursued further interest in only to find nothing, could anyone help?

Puerto Ricans have a whole different way of speaking. I'm learning some spanish, and I can't understand what they're saying.

They speak it too fast or something. I don't know, my spanish speaking friend told me not to bother with them, they're too cocky.

Regeton must be an east coast thing, thank god t hasn't spread to the midwest honestly. I prefer rap/hip hop my self.

It's the worst kind of music you could ever hear period, is like pretend rap/hip-hop fused with crap tecno/autotune and you should feel very lucky that your only exposure to it is from GTA IV radio stations , living in a country where people looove their regeton and literally can't go outside without hearing it is stuff for nightmares, hearing "Daddy Yankee" as one of the DJs in GTA IV radio stations almost made me cry.

@Juicebox: Can you explain more? Is it a totally different vocabulary or just some words are different? My dad is peruvian and he speaks spanish very quickly to his friends.

Reggaeton is Spanish Reggae... and mostly all artists are straight from the Island either puerto rico or dominican republic and some even from brazil so they have there own slang which is hard to understand even if you do speak spanish and if they're not popular or well known you probably won't find them on any site unless it's a specific spanish music website

Coming from a Salvadoran family, I hear my fair share of it. It's always awkward for me at family parties because I don't particularly like it, while my family does. I take it as basically being rapping in Spanish, but I will say it's fun to dance to.

@ItBeStefYo: I totally agree that it starts to get repetitive. And I'm not sure if you mean different vocabulary in the sense of where someone comes from. I can tell you that different Spanish speaking countries have unique words and slang.

Before dubstep exploded, it was always the bassiest music found in game radio stations. I doubt there will be a reggaeton station in GTA5.

@ItBeStefYo: It's not a different language is just what Spanglish sounds like from a Puerto Rican guy you know like the 'Vato' stereotypes from movies but instead of a Mexican is a Puerto Rican , now reggaeton has spread it's awfulness all over Central and South America and it's literally the dominant genre of music because it targets kids and teens from poor neighborhoods and middle class too with "this is a lifestyle" thing for getting drunk, going to parties, having sex with teens and cheating on your girlfriend.

Personally I think is 2 steps below acutal rap and hip-hop as it dosn't really talk about anything meaningfull in the lyrics (not that most rap does it but the lyrics even in the worst pieces of rap are at least well written and rhymes make sense) Reggaeton is just dumb and very annoying as you said a lot and I do mean a lot of the tracks use the same repetitive loop and aparently Regetoneros have just found the amazing piece of software that enables the use of autotune and make the awful tracks sound even more bad , the better produce pieces are the ones that get picked for games like GTA IV and Sain'ts Row, I have listen (not willingly) a lot of regeton and while catchy it won't take too long before it gets anything but annoying.

When I went to Nicaragua, it was reggaeton 24/7. Every single reggaeton song is exactly the same. I'm not using hyperbole. They literally use the same beat but superimpose different lyrics and rythms in their speech.

Reggaeton is definitely not the bee's knees as the kids are hip to saying.

Oh don't get my wrong I'm not saying rap is good for role modeling as you shouldn't take music of any kind for that, but in the terms of reggaeton having similar if not levels of "ripping off english hip/hop culture" about the same portraying of that lifestyle I can at least attribute rap of having just a bit more quality in delivering that message not that the message is any good but reggaeton dosn't even do that is very poor produced and not even good at being offensive , spanish (latin american) hip- hop existed before and it was very similar to english hip-hop just happens that reggaeton butchered that music and made it appealing for people into shity club music and douchebags.

You know I don't get why people say Daddy Yankee is awful.I mean I love my hip hop and rap and my latin hip hop and rap but reggaeton is fine too.Like yeah alot of his songs are kind of awful and just annoying but there some good ones here and there.I mean I can tolerate him, he's not as bad as like Lil Wayne or Drake.There was a point for me where I started disliking it but then I just got used to it.I prefer listening to it at parties waaay more than any Lil Wayne young money shit.I'm just saying I get what you mean but there is far worse out there.Take Polaco for example, maybe it's just his voice but god fucking damnit he makes me want to rip my ears off.Same goes for that Kaponi guy.

You know as far as quality goes Daddy Yankee is one of the "better" (I use the " " because I can't find any other word to describe this crap is better than this other crap) as far as reggaeton goes at least from what I've heard of him in GTA IV and what I've been hearing ad nauseam just by going outside and as I said before living in the states you've probably listen to the best of what reggaeton has to offer, the complete local crap each latin american country produces dosn't get too far off out shores and it shouldn't.

But I can't just give him as a pass as he represent that awful genre that over here transcend more than just music as litterally a large mayority of teenagers has taken their lifestyle as some sort of model they should follow, still I would prefer if Reggaeton dosn't get a radio station exclusive for it in GTA V just having a couple of songs in the default "Latin music station" would be more than enough.... also people on Giant Bomb talking about Reggaeton is I don't know how to describe it now even less as litterally I'm typing while the kid in front of the street plays loud reggaeton, that's the other thing people who listen to it feel the need to put it very loud just cause .

I always had the impression from being into latin dancing for a while that reaggeton is mainly focused on being made for dancing, not necessarily revolusionize the music industry with it's fancy lyrics and amazing imaginative beats. I almost never listen to any reaggeton except the few times I've danced it. It's got a great strong beat in it that is easy to "feel" when your dancing dirty dancing like reaggeton. Youtube it and you see what I mean. Personally I'm more into salsa and bachatta though, reagetton is a bit "hardcore" for me really.

It is music to dance but people think is acutally good music and put them out loud everywhere they go , when you are forced to listen the worst of what reggaeton has to offer you either end up liking it or acknowledge it's awfullness and try to create awareness as to stay away from that crap, and yes the first time I watched people dancing reggaeton I felt dirty and I wasn't even dancing it was like watching porn really unconfortable , probably not so much to the people dancing is like they enter in some sort of "hump trance".

I certainly do like some of Calle 13's stuff. I think the song Latinoamerica is really well written. But yeah, Daddy Yankee is pretty bad.

EDIT: Can Calle 13 even be considered reggaeton?
