I hate the term "gamer". A quick search of the word comes up with a picture of this tool:
It's almost impossible to say the word without using the Gamestop (POWAR TO THE PLAYARZ) voice. In my opinion, someone who goes around saying "yeah man, I'm a gamer" is generally the kind of person who only plays mainstream shooters and sports games. There's a definite difference between the average guy who plays games (a gamer) and someone who is actually a part of gaming culture. One who actively seeks out info on new, creative games and actually gives a crap about the industry.
For example, I was hanging out with my friends a while back, and we were all talking about video games. They were mostly just yammering about Blops the entire time, but I chimed in and mentioned how awful Activision is, considering that they regurgitate these games every year, worked Infinity Ward to death, and worst of all, dropped Bizarre Creations. I just got blank stares. I then realized that my friends are just gamers. I'm not sure that there's a term for people who go beyond that, but I really hate to be stereotyped and bundled in with my idiot friends.
