http://steamcommunity.com/id/palmdesert/badges/

Foil badge (up to level 100) costs approximately $15.90 each

Foil level 100 = ($15.90 x 100) $1,590.

Regular badge (up to level 1000) costs approximately $1.57 each.

Regular level 1000 = ($1.57 x 1000) $1,570

I saw this on a different site and had to share it. He owns over 2000 games, has only played 36 of them, and he currently seems to be sinking his time into Drakensang... a 2year old average RPG.. crazy dude

He's level 260 from what I can see and he has 53 perfect games, so he does play a lot.

Thanks weird guy for buying my random foil badges I guess...

God damn, that's a lot of money for some stupid badges. he also has a crap ton of hours on a lot of games, damn, he plays a lot.

I think he probably just leaves games on and goes afk to get the badges from them or something, and you figure he's pretty wealthy if he's willing to drop down 3k dollars on this worthless stuff.

@bucklebutt: Drakensang and Drakensang: River of Time are much better than average RPGs. River of Time is very good. The river temple boss was a great fight.

Are you sure he isn't a robot? I'm more than willing to bet there are rooms full of computers in China running bots buying up cheap cards and turning them around for 1-2 cent profits millions of times a day. Maybe even bots buying cards from other bots to inflate the prices.

Impressive.

I actually really enjoyed scrolling down the list and looking at badge designs of various games. It's like looking at logos in sports games.

@aetheldod: it is easy to look at it that way, but in honesty if you yourself are not interested in trading cards you can sell them and actually use that money to buy games. It's hard to stay mad at a system that really doesn't punish anybody.

Indeed, this guy is clearly a career otaku. Still, that's just a fucking lot to spend on meaningless Steam levels.

Because Steam orders your friends by levels, and you need to be friends to trade cards, this dude is like the nexus of Steam. If you have a friend that has traded cards with someone you can make to this guy's profile. I stumbled upon him in a quest to see who had the highest level on steam a few months ago, and this was when he was at lvl 150 (I think it was capped.) I had to go through only five or six profiles until I stumbled onto his account.

Also, he isn't paying for the vast majority of his cards - people give them to him and he has a TON of items on sale. The holiday cards are worthless so people just throw them at him.

I guess its hard to know how much of the cards where bought for just plain old Steam wallet additions from his credit card. Maybe he had a big stash of valuable tf2 or dota 2 items. But they where certainly worth that much.

If he has that much money to spare then why the fuck not, at least ~60% of it goes to real people.

Yeah I don't think there's any way to tell if he purchased those snow globe cards or got them other ways. Every $10 nets you a card, and every other badge you create nets you a card as well. So all those level 1 badges for games generated a lot of snow globe cards.

The drop rates on foil cards are so low that he still would've had to buy 99% of his foil cards from the marketplace. Sure, this guy obviously crafts a lot of other badges and crafting those other badges generated snow globe cards, but still, crafting the badge 1000 times would require you to buy a lot of cards from the marketplace.

Whatever. People spend way more on much more useless shit. Know anyone with money who likes to gamble? And at least dude plays a ton and loves games. Also sales are good for the all those devs. Maybe he wants to archive all the pc games of a generation or something. Not much different than Jeff's collecting older games. My curious question is how and where is he storing all those games.

If I'm every in that dark a place in my life, could someone please hit me over the head and remind me that I really should be donating my money to needy families and not Gabe Newell's Pocket. Not that I'm saying that the gentleman in question didn't have the right to do what he did, but it's just NEVER a choice I would make.

Also I just noticed this in his profile: 28,127 Market Transactions

He probably received a few of the rare items from crafted all of those though. Some of them sold for over $100.

sooooooo, this guy now gets more wallpaper and little slots to features things on his profiles..... He doesn't get a free steam machine. Like the whole incentive to level up your profile isn't that exciting, maybe to lord over people "LOOK I LIKE THIS GAME THIS MUCH! I Have a batman badge and it's titled 'the bat'" There's something so stupid about this guy, he dumps all this money and now he gets NOTHING except wallpapers and little features on his profiles. Like wow, some people have too much money to know what to do with it. Like go do some coke on a stripper please.

If Jeff really said that his stupidity surprises me. This in no way affects the balance of a game or the experience of the end user.

Dumb as hell comparison.

So, wait, he didn't level up his badge by buying games for $3000 and thus getting around 300 trading cards, but by spending $3000 on buying cards? That's kinda crazy. But, sure, I can identify with buying more games than I play on Steam, I currently have around 800 and I don't think I've ever booted up more than a hundred.

This Pokeman collect them all badge malarkey is bull shit. People with fewer games in their library and less time and achievements in said games get access to profile features that I don't? Because I'm not stupid enough to trade for cards that don't exist. I can't believe there is an actual virtual market for this crap. Only in countries where we have too much can we assign value to something that doesn't exist. This is the bottom depths of shallow materialism, and it's not even a material object.

True that! If Steam measured levels that way, I'd be like level 50 by this point.

On the plus side, the amount of interest and interest he has gotten from everyone oogling his account and the links to his band stuff and youtube has probably easily made any of that money back. Dudes, been interviewed and put on local TV and as far as 'whales' go is a pretty small fish.
