Franchise Reboot
Concept »
The idea of taking an existing franchise and starting over from scratch, overhauling the gameplay and sometimes going so far as to remove it from any connection to previous games in a series. Such is sometimes done when attempting to revitalize a franchise that is showing its age and has fallen into disfavor.
Favourite 2013 reboot
DmC was pretty good but it's Tomb Raider for me... At least I think it is, I played them both sooooo long ago.
Don't forget, DmC had not QtEs.
DmC for sure. I finally got over the new Dante's look because I was younger and prone to plenty of knee-jerk reactions when the game was initially revealed, and realized it's not important. Had a really great time with it and would recommend it to just about anyone.
DmC by virtue of being the only one I played, Dante's look is the least of its problems but it's not bad.
I guess it's Tomb Raider for me, as i thought the series was rather cruddy until then. DmC was OK, and it made a vast amount of improvements pertaining to the story, soundtrack, and art style, but I still vastly prefer DMC3 & DMC4 for their gameplay, which is of course a pretty key aspect of that series.
This is like a spoiler thread; I didn't know any of these featured LQFJNT people. I'm guessing that neither Rise of the Triad nor Shadow Warrior characterize them well...
DmC. I had a lot of fun with both Tomb Raider and DmC, but the consistent batshit-insanity of DmC is too amazing not to fall in love with. Tomb Raider was mad fun too, but the way it bumbled its story/gameplay balance always nags at me.
Haven't played any of the others, but I'd love to get my mitts on Killer Instinct. That game seems awesome.
Tomb Raider's on the to-do list. I've played DMC and really liked it for what it was. Shadow Warrior was alright, but then again I thought the first one was just alright so I guess it delivers there. I loved Rise of the Triad for it's closeness to the source material in this ironsights world. I think my favorite, so far, is Triad because MAN that's some dumbass shit.

Wait, are DMC 3 and DMC 4 filled with fixed camera angles?
Both were excellent. But Tomb Raider IS the better reboot, because the franchise before it was just bad. The only good ones were TR 1 and 2 back in the late 90's. Devil May Cry, on the other hand, was a great franchise to begin with, so even if DmC did it justice, it didn't achieve the outstanding job that Tomb Raider did to revive its mediocre series.

There are camera angles in there--most prominently in DMC3--but they don't get in the way nearly as much as they did in the first DMC. They're generally better positioned and there's a lot more open environments, too.
Tomb Raider, obviously. I have mathematical proof!
Uncharted = awesome.
Boobs = awesome.
So therefore Tomb Raider = awesome.
But in all seriousness I really enjoyed the game and I am looking forward to what's next.
DMC was great, that combat felt awesome and it had some interesting fights and levels. The story was alright and absurd in all the right places. Tomb Raider barely ok to me, I really dont like it as much as some other people.
DMC by far.
I was disappointed this thread wasn't about a 2013 reboot of the hit canadian animation show "Reboot" of the early 90's.
Edit - Ah fuck seriously? I said the Reboot thing as a joke!
DmC is excellent and by far the only game in that franchise that I think is worth a damn, but I've got to go with Tomb Raider. I was completely blown away by how much better it was than I expected it to be.

The original DMC practically invented its own genre. Regardless of how you feel about its quality as a game (and it certainly hasn't aged well, that's for sure) it's silly to ignore its relevance.
DmC is awesome, Tomb Raider is decent.
KI isn't a reboot. Just a sequel that dropped the number.
Don't blame me, I'm just going by the wiki. I know next to nothing about the Killer Instinct series.
@beachthunder: The wiki here is the only one that says reboot while every other places i've seen says that story mode coming in march is supposed to continue after KI 2 but none of them list any sources... I guess it comes down to one site without sources vs 7 other sites with no sources! I guess we'll see when it happens.

Disgusting.
I don't know if it really counts as a reboot, but as far as games reinvigorating people's interest in it's own franchise then I have to go with Fire Emblem awakening.
My real answer is Tomb Raider.
I am the minority here, but I loved ROTT. Shadow Warrior is alright, but just the way the engine is and the studio's works makes the game feel like I'm on skates hitting pinatas, also they took out dual uzis, fegs. Also shadowrun was kinda cool except they made it into a tablet game more-so than what it really should of been, but OPINIONS!

You're not wrong about it reinvigorating interest, but it's definitely not a reboot.

Disgusting.
Giana Sisters.
With all this DmC talk I want Brad and Vinny to continue on their Bradley May Cry adventure. I could go either way if they decide to play 2, maybe they could play the first few hours or so just to see what it's like and move on to 3 (the best one).
I'm really not sure, I can barely decide which I like more: Tomb Raider or DmC, really enjoyed both. Maybe as far as reboots go Tomb Raider is more successful, since it's a franchise I've never been big into and I really enjoyed Tomb Raider 2013. DmC on the other hand is a really fun action game, but it's not as good as the series best.
@nightriff Don't give them anything for that disgusting money grab. It's still graphically less impressive than the PC version, and that segment on the VGX they did was disgusting. All it is is a money grab to sell the game again at full price.
ReBoot was one of my favorite tv shows growing up, and yeah, this list is curiously absent shadowrun returns, which I would say is higher profile (and a better game) than RotT or Shadow Warrior, but that's just me.
As for the actual question, While DmC is not a bad game in my opinion, I've actually liked other games in the series. Tomb Raider has always been shit to me, and I played through this one to completion. That suggests to me that while DmC may (or may not) be a better game, the more successful reboot is by far Tomb Raider.
