Pretty impressive worldwide numbers for a game that didn't even chart on the NPDs the month it was released.
Gran Turismo 5
Game » consists of 9 releases. Released Nov 24, 2010
Gran Turismo 5 is the fifth edition in the long running racing game series by Polyphony Digital. The game sports over 1000 vehicles, damage modeling on race cars, a dedicated television channel, lots of races, 16 player online multiplayer, and active weather.
Gran turismo 5 sold 6.37 million copies in first six weeks
"4 million copies sold in Europe itself"
Yes, We Europeans are crazy about racing and football(soccer) games.
This is great sales, but compared to other GT games it's not very good. The sales are definitely declining if you take a look at the whole series.
I bought it though, and traded it in like a week later. I was getting so pumped about it thanks to SOMEONE on these threads, but that game has way too many faults for me to have kept playing. So boring and inaccessible.
But if 4 million of those were in EU alone... that doesn't mean very good sales in other continents :/
As of the 1.06 update, GT5 has already been improved on enormously. The game will probably pass 10 million in sales by summer, especially if the rumored PS3 price cut at GDC turns out to be true.
4 million in EU still means 2.37 million everywhere else, which is nothing to sneeze at.

I'm not European and I like driving games and soccer games. Winning Eleven... yes please.
Someone explain to me why Europeans like bad racing games.
Edit: I just realized that tone doesn't exactly translate over the internet. I was half-joking. Nobody attack me. :P

I got impatient with the game after a week or two and abandoned it, for everything it did right there was three things that seemed to annoy me in equal measure. It also quickly turned into a loading simulator, every action had a loading screen behind it. By all accounts it only improves with each week though, this game might be the embodiment of the release now, patch later attitude most developers seem to be taking nowadays.
I guess we just like our racing games, the Colin McRae were virtually unknown outside of Europe until Dirt opened it up to a wider audience. I remember for the longest time there being no reviews for the series on Gamespot way back when.
