Well after finishing the game on Heroic, I was really impressed with
the space combat. It sort of reminded me of Wing Commander for
some reason. I hope in the future, Halo, or whoever will integrate
space combat with FPS or ground game/combat (I hope some RPGs
will do this too).
Ironically, I think the only space game out there that has both a
ground & space game that is fairly lengthy is Star Trek Online. lol.
Halo: Reach
Game » consists of 13 releases. Released Sep 14, 2010
A prequel to Halo: Combat Evolved, chronicling one of the most cataclysmic events of the Halo Universe through the eyes of a squad of Spartan super-soldiers known as Noble Team. It is also the last game in the series developed by Bungie.
Excellent space combat
It was a pretty good set piece. Died several times before I had to invert the controls then it was a breeze. Was a little disappointed the docking/landing was a cutscene and I couldn't do it myself. Always wanted to land a spacecraft inside a larger spacecraft while flying around in space...
Also, space is awesome.
I was impressed at how well the whole thing handled more than them putting in a space level but boarding that Covie ship awesome, one of the best looking levels in the game.
I would not be surprised if it was added as multi player DLC later since it was meant to be in the game but wasn't finished because it took too much time.
Wouldn't say excellent, Star Wars Galaxies for example had a bit more depth to name just one, but it did what it had to and was a fun change of pace for sure =)
I guess my reaction to it was just sort of "meh." I mean, it was very sound, technically speaking. But I played Battlefront II, you know? It just sort of felt like that. Which is not really a knock on Reach. But I wasn't blown away by it. And I sort of felt like that level was pretty compact, maybe too empty, too. I would've liked to have taken down a big Covenant ship or two before assaulting the Corvette.
" Utterly unremarkable unless you actively avoid any air/space shooters. "Not true at all.
" Play Freespace 2. That is excellent space combat and it's starting to look like it will never, ever be bettered since the genre is dead. "I heard it was riddled with bugs when it came out so
I steered clear. Wasn't it released 10-12 years ago?
I remember Elite and Frontier fondly but I can't really remember if they were good or if they were just good for their times.
If I can't land/doc in a manual mode though forget it. Not interested; your game sucks. I'm not saying every docking or landing has to be manual but they have to be in the game with real danger of failure. Derelict space stations or freighters, uninhabited planets or moons, asteroids, etc. I want full 3D control with something crazy like matching rotations and trajectory with an asteroid and landing safely. Full sim-style space controls, not airplanes-in-space. And I want it in the Mass Effect universe. Now. RIGHT NOW.
" @evanbrau said:Wow you're right. Now I feel old! I bought it at launch and I don't remember any bugs but if there were any then they are long, long gone. If the graphics are holding you back the game has been overhauled many times by fans since the source code was released. You can even download a version of the first games campaign (complete with cutscenes etc) for the second games engine. With all the fan mods it now looks really decent (although it never really aged horribly to begin with) and still plays just as well as it did then. It's obviously on a whole different level of complexity to a single level from an FPS (I wasn't trying to compare but mainly lamenting the death of the genre) but you really do owe it to yourself to at least give it a try. It's an amazing experience." Play Freespace 2. That is excellent space combat and it's starting to look like it will never, ever be bettered since the genre is dead.
